Ensure Fair Hearings for President Obama's Supreme Court Nominee

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America
President Obama has nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court. This is an extraordinary time - a chance to fill a seat on the Supreme Court with a champion of privacy and freedom. Discussion about Roe v. Wade will - and must - be part of this nomination process. The vast majority of Americans support the values of freedom and privacy this ruling represents.

Judge Sotomayor has a distinguished record of professional accomplishments, and America's pro-choice majority is eager to learn more about this nominee. Urge you senator to ensure that Judge Sotomayor gets a fair hearing from the Senate Judiciary Committee that includes questions about the right to privacy as defined in Roe v. Wade.

Dear Senator [Name],

As your constituent, I'm writing to ask you to work with your colleagues to ensure that Judge Sonia Sotomayor gets a fair hearing from the Senate Judiciary Committee that includes questions about the right to privacy as defined in Roe v. Wade.

President Obama has selected a nominee with a distinguished record of professional accomplishments as a judge, prosecutor, and community leader. This impressive personal biography signals that she possesses an understanding of how the law affects everyday people's lives.

This is an extraordinary time for our country and for the Senate. You will have a chance in these coming week and months to fill a seat on the Supreme Court with a highly qualified individual. Along with millions of other pro-choice Americans, I'm counting on you to make sure that we maximize this opportunity.

The Religious Right among the Republicans who are opposed to abortion are basing their decision on religious Biblical teaching, a religious decision having no place in government decisions affecting all the citizens in this country. Women and families should make their own decisions on this matter, not the government, and no individual, being considered for a position on the Supreme Court, should pass or fail solely on his or her position on abortion. This subject is stressed so much, it casts a shadow that almost negates the candidate's total previous successful life's work.
