Toto, Kansas is getting scary.
The Attorney General of Kansas is demanding that two abortion clinics turn over the complete medical records - including all patient information - of close to 90 women and girls. Attorney General Phill Kline claims he needs these medical records, complete with identifiable personal information, to investigate whether late-term abortions were legal and whether teenagers may have been victims of statutory rape.
This action is eerily reminiscent of former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft's attempts to subpoena the medical records of women who had late-term abortions last year - several federal judges struck down his subpoenas. And these tactics are nothing short of intimidation. If Kline was truly only concerned with investigating statutory rape and late-term abortion practices, he would not need the personal information and complete medical history of individual patients.
