Ask the World Bank to include humane treatment of animals as part of its due diligence

Write to safeguardconsult@worldbank.org asking for the inclusion of human impacts on animal welfare in the policies of the World Bank. If the World Bank, it will not only help future lending be more humane, but it will also, in the longer term, influence national and local policy making in this field all around the planet.

WB claims that « People and the environment are at the center of all its work », and it currently engages in a major overhaul of its environmental and social framework, which is at the core of its operations. However, the World Bank expresses no concern for the human impacts on animal welfare. The themes that are presently considered to be part of the new environmental and social framework are limited to Labor and Working Conditions; Resource Efficiency and Pollution Prevention; Community Health and Safety; Land Acquisition, Restrictions on Land Use and Involuntary Resettlement; Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Management of Living Natural Resources; Indigenous Peoples; Cultural Heritage. Prevention of cruelty to animals is not covered by the standard on « sustainable management of living natural resources ».
Animals are not just resources for the people to manage. Consultation closes March 1. Please sign the petition.

Attention Dr Jim Kim, President, World Bank

Mr President, 584 persons from around the world have signed a petition respectfully asking you to include the humane treatment of animals in World Bank's due diligence by integrating that concern in the new Environmental and Social Framework and the new safeguard policies. The concern for the humane treatment of animals has so far not been integrated into the purview of Bank's safeguard policies and the new standards displayed on your consultation page do not cover this critical concern either. I hope that you will hear our voices. regards

Update #29 years ago
I just received word from the World Bank confirming that the deadline for public comments is March 1st (this coming Sunday). There is urgency in getting animal loving folks around you to chime in and sign. By the way, I keep compiling WB reports on many animal production projects and I can confirm that concern for animal (unnecessary) pain is sabsent from the design of these projects. Many thanks for your past end future help.

I am truly impressed by the support given to this petition and it encourages me to continue the fight. I have added a video to make my point clearer. Comments welcome.
