Right now the disease is confined to just three places – Afghanistan, Pakistan and, most recently, Nigeria – a testament to the hard work and dedication of hundreds of thousands of polio workers around the world.
However these two new cases in north-east Nigeria remind us we cannot allow for there to be any complacency when it comes to stopping polio in its tracks.
The UK has a proud history of leading polio eradication efforts. If we are to finally wipe out this disease, the UK’s continued long-term leadership is vital.

That’s why we’re calling on you in your role as Secretary of State for International Development to continue the work of your predecessors and help us finally consign polio to history.
By continuing to commit to funding the Global Polio Eradication Initiative we will make sure that no child – no matter where they live - ever has to suffer from polio again.
A polio-free world. That’s worth pausing and thinking about for a moment.
Not only would that be a milestone in world history and a lasting legacy that the UK helped make. But the knowledge, skills and resilient systems used in eradicating it would also form a major contribution to tackling other diseases and strengthening health systems.
