Around the world, more than 43 million young girls don't have the opportunity to attend school. The lack of education is both a cause and a consequence of poverty - and cuts off the development of entire societies. When girls have access to basic education it has tremendous impacts in areas like public health and economic growth. Over the years, the benefits reach families, communities and countries as a whole. The United States can take an important step to get children in the world's poorest countries into school by passing the Education for All Act of 2007.

This bi-partisan legislation would:

Around the world today, 77 million children of primary school age are out of school and 57 percent of them are girls. Millions more children are enrolled in school but do not receive a quality education and are at risk of dropping out.

Basic education for girls is an investment that yields many benefits. Women who have a basic education have lower HIV infection rates and earn more money; their children are also more likely to live past their fifth birthday and experience lower rates of malnutrition. This positive "multiplier effect" of basic education makes it a smart and strategic sector in which to invest increased U.S. foreign assistance.

The bi-partisan Education for All Act lays out a plan for U.S. involvement in making basic education an opportunity for all children around the world. I urge you support this goal by co-sponsoring the Education for All Act of 2007 - S.1259 in the Senate or H.R.2092 in the House.
