Send Donna, the lone Asian elephant to The Elephant Sanctuary in TN

  • recipient: David Meeks, Director and Owner, Hollywild Animal Park
Donna needs companionship of other female Asian elephants in a healthy environment at a sanctuary.

Update: I regret to inform you that Donna died November 17, 2006 at the Hollywild Animal Park. Donna lived alone most of her life in sub-standard conditions. Unfortunately, she never lived to see sanctuary.

Newspapers stated that Donna was 48 years old when she died, but Hollywild staff confirmed Donna's age to be 38 years in 2005. Either way, Donna died far short of her 70 year life expectancy. Rest in Peace, Donna. We hope you are in a better place.

Donna, a 38-year old retired circus elephant, lives a life of solitary confinement at the Hollywild Animal Park in South Carolina. Her enclosure is extremely small, has no pool, nothing to graze on, and most importantly no company of other Asian female elephants. There is simply nothing to do for Donna.

Hollywild Animal Park rents out the animals for commercials and movies, where Donna has been used several times. Hollywild Animal Park has also a lenghty history of animal neglect and has been cited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture numerous times. Some of these citations include failure to provide proper veterinary care for elephants in need of tuberculosis tests and foot care, excessive accumulation of feces in the elephant enclosure, improper feeding, poor sanitation and unclean drinking water.

At least six elephants have died at Hollywild Animal Park since November 1991.

A recent observation of Donna shows that she has pressure wounds on her body. It has been confirmed by the park staff that Donna has pressure wounds as a result of sleeping on the concrete floor in her barn.

Donna urgently needs to be transferred to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee where she can walk and roam on soft ground, graze on fresh vegetation, swim and play in lakes and ponds, and live out her natural behaviors like an elephant is supposed to do - in several hundreds acres. At the sanctuary, Donna will also have the opportunity to seek comfort and communicate with other female Asian elephants, and influence her own days. The ability to walk in a large natural habitat with companionship of her own kind is important for elephants, both phsyically and mentally. Elephants living in small zoo environments typically die prematurely of captive induced illnesses, like artirithis and foot rot, and display neurotic behaviors out of frustration and boredom, which often leads to aggression.

We, the undersigned wholeheartedly ask the Hollywild Animal Park to have a heart and release Donna to The Elephant Sanctuary, where she will be taken care of by experienced and loving staff.
