Act now: Demand fair, safe working conditions for poultry workers

Roughly a quarter of a million people work on the processing line in American poultry plants. Every day, hundreds of thousands of workers become disposable parts of a large, fast, relentless machine. These women and men stand on the line hour after hour, faced with an endless stream of chicken carcasses. They repeat the same motions tens of thousands of times each shift, with few moments to rest, stretch, or take a bathroom break.

These problems are industry-wide, but the four biggest poultry companies --Tyson Foods, Pilgrim's, Perdue, and Sanderson Farms -- control nearly 60 percent of the chicken market. As industry leaders, they have the power to make changes to quickly improve conditions for their workers. But they won't, unless they hear a loud and clear message from people like you.

Join Oxfam America and urge poultry companies to provide the following for their workers:

  • Fair pay and benefits
  • A safe working environment, and
  • A voice in the workplace

TYSON FOODS, PILGRIM’S, PERDUE, SANDERSON FARMS:

I care where my chicken comes from - and I care deeply about the people who help get it to my family's table. As they process the chicken we eat, poultry workers face dangerous conditions and poverty-level wages on a daily basis. Workers in your factories deserve:

  • Fair pay and benefits: pay workers a living wage that enables them to support their families without relying on federal assistance or charity, provide earned sick time, and provide health insurance coverage for workers and their families.

  • A safe working environment: implement policies that allow each worker to work at a speed that does not inflict injury, provide appropriate medical care when workers are injured, and make sure workers can report incidents without fear of reprisal.

  • A voice in the workplace: ensure workers have regular opportunities to talk freely with managers and supervisors, make sure workers can report problems and speak freely without fear of being penalized or fired, and establish a code of conduct that only punishes behavior that is illegal or dangerous, and provide workers a written copy of the discipline system policies.

Please implement changes throughout your poultry plants and lead the way in ensuring that your workers have the right to safety, opportunity, and dignity in their labor.
