What Does Dr. King's "Dream" Mean to You?

Sponsored by: Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial

"And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream..." -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In August of 1963, while standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in front of 250,000 civil rights protestors, Dr. King delivered his most famous speech, "I Have a Dream".

In that speech, he prodded the American conscience and spoke of the moral force that hungered for justice and equality. His was a message of civil rights and economic justice, a message that lives on beyond that moment in 1963.

And almost 46 years later with Barack Obama as President, the truth in Dr. King's words still moves us. So in celebration of Dr. King's message and legacy, we're asking for your thoughts on "The Dream." How does "The Dream" live on?

Please take a moment to tell us, "What does "The Dream" mean to you?"

That people are capable of finding their common humanity, despite cultural, economic, gender or any other differences that can be conjured up. That what unites us is greater than that which divides us.

I live Dr Kings dream every day. I am white/latino and my children are part black. The greatest most beautiful moments in my life were shared with wonderful people of all colors. They were my family or they became my family. I watch our children playing with other children of other races with no racist undertones. Dr Kings dream is a beautiful thing and I feel very blessed.

Martin Luther King Jr.s dream to me is a means to give everyone an equal ground from which to start the race that is life. If his dream became realized then there would be no more "handicap" for race, gender, orientation or religious preference. Only when people start at the same place can we have the chance of really knowing each other as human beings and taking steps towards becoming a team.
