Protect America's Arctic from Risky Oil Drilling!

America's Arctic Ocean, just north of Alaska, is like no place on Earth. Unique wildlife thrive here, adapted to the icy, northern waters. Millions of birds such as the magnificent King Eider, along with walrus, seals, beluga whales, and half of America's polar bears, rely on the Arctic's Chukchi Sea.

Yet oil companies such as Shell are fighting tooth and nail to drill in this irreplaceable ecosystem. Their track record has been a disaster. In Shell's previous season, its drilling rig ran aground in rough weather, an oil spill containment dome was "crushed like a beer can" during a test in calm waters near Seattle, and the corporation had to pay $1.1 million dollars for dozens of air-pollution violations.

Now, the Obama administration has rushed through a new environmental study without doing the careful analysis that this pristine ocean deserves, while admitting there is a 75% chance of a large oil spill. Write to the administration and submit a public comment to express disappointment, and urge them to take the best science into account. The Arctic is far too valuable to rush toward dangerous oil drilling.

Take action today and urge our officials not to rush toward oil drilling in this critical ecosystem!
To the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, I am disappointed by the rushed environmental analysis of the oil and gas Lease Sale 193 in the Chukchi Sea. The Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement must take into account the best and most current science to sufficiently protect the incredible array of birds and other wildlife that the Chukchi Sea supports. The Chukchi Sea is a unique and valuable resource that will be put at serious risk from oil and gas drilling. In particular, areas such as the Chukchi Corridor, Barrow Canyon Complex, and Hanna and Herald Shoals, are critical to the health of this ecosystem, and will provide resilience in the face of climate change. Birds such as the Spectacled, Steller's, and King Eiders, Brant, Thick-Billed Murres, and Yellow-Billed Loons, along with mammals such as polar bears, Pacific walrus, bearded and ring seals, beluga and bowhead whales, and many more, must be protected from the real risk of oil spills. An oil spill in the Chukchi Sea would be devastating in this remote region, and the technology for a clean-up here is unproven. I urge you to not to rush forward with Lease Sale 193, and to take into account the most current science available to protect wildlife, in order to ensure that this incomparable ecosystem remains pristine for future generations.
