  • by: Jonathan Cook
  • recipient: Hillary Clinton, United States Senator, United States Senate
Requests Senator Hillary Clinton and all other US Senators to strongly oppose the nomination of Alberto Gonzales
Whereas Alberto Gonzales has, as White House counsel, told President George W. Bush in writing that it is legally acceptable to use torture in the questioning of prisoners;

whereas Alberto Gonzales has, as White House counsel, told President George W. Bush in writing that the Geneva Conventions are "quaint" and "obsolete";

whereas Alberto Gonzales has, as White House counsel, defended the ability of President George W. Bush to seize American citizens on American soil and hold them indefinitely as prisoners with access to lawyers or even a criminal charge;

whereas Alberto Gonzales has, as White House counsel, helped to write the infamous Patriot Act and has promoted the Act's most controversial positions in spite of their violation of basic freedoms guaranteed in the Bill of Rights;

and whereas we need an Attorney General of the United States of America who who will defend our freedoms instead of devising ways for the President of the United States to take them away;

we, the undersigned request that all members of the United States Senate strongly oppose the nomination of Alberto Gonzales to become Attorney General of the United States of America.
