France Has Become the First Country to Protect Abortion Rights In Its Constitution! The US Must Follow!

On March 4, 2024, scenes across France were described as euphoric -- out on the streets, in the halls of Parliament, all over, people were celebrating. That day marked France's move to become the first country in history to enshrine the right to abortion in its constitution.

This is a massive victory for human rights. The right to choose should be guaranteed everywhere. Sign the petition if you agree.

The bill that won a sweeping vote of 780-72 in the French Parliament amended the country's constitution to make abortion a "guaranteed freedom" there. This sends an overwhelming message of support and protection for this and future generations -- that your body is yours, and the choices you make for it are yours alone too.

The decision to terminate a pregnancy is deeply personal, and can be based on countless valid reasons, including but not limited to: simply not wanting to be pregnant, health concerns, financial, emotional, or relational reasons, and so on. No government should have the right to force a person to be pregnant against their will -- and France is sending a strong message that they believe just that.

While support for abortion rights holds a vast majority across France, lawmakers there decided to guarantee in the constitution as a direct response to Roe v. Wade being overturned in the US. The reversal of Roe v. Wade meant that suddenly, US states could make abortion illegal. And many of them did, robbing millions of people of their right to choose and eliminating vital healthcare.

Now that there is a precedent for this kind of constitutional protection, US lawmakers must do everything in their power to emulate France's move. Pregnant people in the US being forced to stay pregnant against their will, becoming human incubators. Pregnant people who need abortions for medical reasons -- if the pregnancy is not viable, for example, and they are at risk of complications unless it is terminated -- are being told that abortion bans are more important than saving their lives.

This must end.

As France celebrates, the world is watching the US. Let's tell politicians there exactly what lit up the Eiffel Tower on March 4th -- "my body, my choice."
