Protect My Family From Dirty Coal Pollution!

  • by: Sierra Club

My name is Surita Hernandez and I live on the Moapa Band of Paiutes Indian Reservation with my husband and five children and the Reid Gardner coal plant is destroying the health of my family and tribe. The plant is only 500 yards from my backyard and creates a dark cloud that rains dirty coal pollution.

As a result my entire family has been prescribed inhalers, nebulizers, and prescription medications to manage our respiratory conditions -- but when smoke from the smoke stacks blows over our house we have to stay indoors. I fear for the health of my kids and family.

The EPA is taking public comments about a plan to require Reid Gardner to install pollution controls that reduce dirty coal pollution but the proposal only recommends second-rate pollution control technology.

My family and our entire tribe testified at a recent hearing about the EPA's plan and called for the best pollution controls available to save our health and way of life. But without your help the EPA may settle for their proposed second-rate solution.

Join my family and tribe and stand for clean air and a healthy future. Send a comment to the EPA and protect my family and tribe from dangerous coal pollution.
Subject: Protect the Moapa Paiutes from dangerous air pollution

Dear EPA Administrator Jared Blumenfeld,

The EPA draft decision says that non-catalytic technology is good enough to clean up nitrogen oxides from the smokestacks at Reid Gardner.

I urge you to change that decision and require first-rate, selective catalytic technology in Nevada at Reid Gardner. The EPA has already required this same modern technology on many other units around the country.

I remind you of your obligation to protect both public health and the environment from pollution. The modern catalytic technology will remove up to 90% of the nitrogen oxides produced by the Reid Gardner power plant and contribute significantly to the health of the Moapa Paiutes and all their downwind neighbors.
