3,193 2:29 pm PDT, Oct 30 john irvin arvada Colorado We should not close the season on squirrels, in colorado our squirrels carry the plague and rabies when the population becomes to over populated. the forest service ends up having to poison the critters. so which is worse being shot or poisoned. or better yet, when poor children get bit by fleas or squirrels and die from the sickness, who will protect the squirrels then.
3,192 2:03 pm PDT, Oct 26 Grace Cooper   New York All my life I have hated the idea of hunting. Though I am a little more educated on the subject then I used to be, I still feel strongly that there should be strict laws controlling it. If you hunt for food only, do not waste anything usable, and never ever hunt when it is likely that the animal you are hunting is taking care of babies, then I believe that it would be ok, but only then. Anyone who has fun killing anything has serious problems. I don't care how many people this applies to, they all are absolutely disgusting. Also, I have a particular affection for squirrels and am glad I do not live in Texas with its completely barbaric laws towards animals
3,191 3:17 pm PDT, Sep 6 Anonymous Medford lakes New Jersey Leave an open season. Squirrels are just bushy tailed rats.
3,190 10:13 am PDT, Sep 3 Anonymous Houston Texas Close the season on squirrel hunting during breeding time, that way we have more of those great tasting rodents to hunt in the fall. Where I grew up in Southern Illinois (Little Egypt) we used to cook them by the hundreds in chowders during the fall. Texas squirrels taste just as good fried, stewed, or cooked by the hundred in a chowder kettel over an open fire. Squirrels are mean little critters. Dominant male's raid nests and castrate baby males by biting off their testicles. Oh, such darling innocent critters huh! This Texan and family members love the great taste of male, female, or eunuch squirrel, if you've never eaten them, you don't know what you're missing. Let's allow the babies to grow up so we can hunt them and eat them.

3,184 7:20 pm PDT, May 15 karen eisenlord Los Angeles California I live in a canyon in the mountains. The squirrels here are friendly and not a problem at all. They are my companions. These animals should be protected like any other animal. Yes, there should be a "closed season" on squirrel hunting. As far as I am concerned there should be no hunting season on squirrels. Where I live there is a perfect balance of nature between all forms of life. There is no need for "hunters" here. If nature is left to thrive with "natural" intended balance of predator and prey, people wouldn't have "rodent" problems. We have mice where I live also. The owls keep them under control. I do not use any form of poison or traps. The only thing I would ever consider, if there was a problem, was trapping a squirrel and relocating the animal. There is no need for this, because nature is perfectly balanced where I live, as it should be.

3,167 11:12 am PST, Jan 19 Noel harvey efland North Carolina I came to hunting later in life after 45 years of believing the practice was barbaric. Then I read "Fast Food Nation" and visited a stockyard. Why any able-bodied person would purchase their meat from a store that stocks from the commercial meat-producing establishment is beyond me. The meat I get from hunting deer, rabbits, pigs, and squirrels is of superior quality, naturally free-range, low in fat content, and unpolluted by artificial growth hormones. Adding hunting to my organic gardening hobby gives me a closer connection to the land and a greater appreciation for life and the source of my family's food. Hunting represents the reality of living. Therefore Texas should not close squirrel season.

3,160 10:25 pm PST, Nov 27 Randy Moseley San Antonio Texas Dear Non-hunter, Yes, there are less & less hunters every year. We are a slowly, but proud dying breed. You would think after centuries of watching how destructive people in general are you would learn to work on conservation issues instead of hunting issues. True hunters don't hunt for sport; they hunt because it is a way of life for them. Hunters don’t need non-hunters to tell them what & how to live (that’s like slavery). Do hunters tell you non-hunters what to do? In truth it is un-American to try to force other people to live like you, isn’t it? Actually, it is more like democratic socialism by the masses. What happen to freedom of choice? Freedom of choice the second most cherished American right besides being free. So, give us hunters a break. We are the only ones who pay for our lifestyle choice. You, the non-hunters don’t pay a penny. If you want more animals, then buy a state-hunting license & federal duck stamp that bring income to the state parks & wildlife division to purchase more land for animal conservation. Then petition the sorry city planners & developers that rape the land. I would love to hunt these political & corporate animals. I would mount their heads & butts on my wall. You could even petition for more game wardens. Talk about a great grassroots movement. Lastly, where are you animal lovers when a car hits a deer or other native animal? Last night a car hit a deer near where I work. They city police weren’t coming to help. Animal control was coming to help. Initially the TPWD weren't coming because the animal is native to the state and is not being aggressive towards people (society) or you. It took hours to get this poor animal taken care of by TPWD. (THANKS). If you the animal lovers weren’t feeding the deer or squirrels, maybe these animals wouldn't get hit and killed. Remember these are animals, not friends or not pets like you think. You are the ones causing a lot of city animal deaths. So, my question is where are you good Samaritans when you’re supposedly pet or personal friend is injured? Where are your money contributions for these animals? So, please, please let the TPWD due its job. They have made Texas the best animal conservation state in the Union. Hunting is the only source of financing for conservation at a state & federal level. So, don’t complain about of hunters for having a different lifestyle than your. We are the true Americans, so just say thank-you. Randy A. Moseley

3,158 10:32 am PST, Nov 20 Sam Spade San Francisco California Dear TPWD; There should be NO closed season on squirrel hunting. There should always be managed hunting allowed of any species of game animal. The biggest and most inhumane threat to the 'natural' environment is habitat loss due to un-checked urban sprawl, and the worst offenders / promoters of this sprawl are the so called 'hip urban yuppies' who live, isolated from any form of true contact with nature or wilderness by habitually residing in the concrete and glass nightmares called 'cities'. These people, who 'live' in the afore mentioned 'cities' also promote the biggest lie of our time...that being that THEY are somehow 'more connected' to 'nature' than those "red-staters" who actually LIVE in the natural environment.....The closest connection the urban yuppie has to 'nature' is the t.v. set....all they ever do for 'food' is go to the grocery store...they have NO concept of living well...in place...on the land. Hunting, fishing, farming, ranching are all totally foreign concepts to these 'urban' people...They are indeed the MOST un-educated and out of touch people to be found.
3,157 12:40 pm PST, Nov 14 Marion Martinelli Sunnyvale CA California Our squirrels are people friendly and good animals who do nothing more than eat nuts and hang out in trees, to kill them is weak and ignorant. It sickens me to think that they are in danger for Human sport.

3,155 4:15 pm PST, Nov 12 Joanna Suchman San Diego California
3,154 6:50 pm PST, Nov 3 John Broussard Roseville California I cannot think of a good reason to close the Texas squirrel season. I'm sorry that so many misunderstand the nature of hunting. In reality, we all kill to eat whether it is through poisoning or displacing woodland critters to grow "organic" vegetables or a hunter who goes into the wilds to hunt wild game. Something dies when we eat - it really IS that simple. Hunting and hunters just face that reality in a more direct way. Condeming hunters is a knee-jerk reaction to someone's oblivious misunderstanding of the circle of life. Furthermore, while I'll readily admit that it's the 21st century and it is easier to go to the store for food, it is naive to assume that nothing is being killed to fill those grocery store shelves and hypocritical to purchase food if you cannot accept your responsibility for it being there - several million cows die each year to make your Big Macs. I accept the truth and all that it entails. I consider ethically hunted and gathered food to be the most natural and organic food available. Count me as a purist in favor of nature and all things natural - including hunting.
3,153 12:50 pm PST, Nov 1 Thomas Moxey Parma Ohio When a species runs rampant with little or no natural enemies for population control, bad things happen. Every year my phone line gets chewed through, the back of my garage looks like swiss cheese.... and my $30/ yard mulch is destroyed. Simple shooting these rodents won't cure the problem.... they are territorial and once you eliminate the current trouble-makers, it won't be long before their turf is taken over by the next set of property wreckers. And for the rodent lovers out there, if you can't confine them to your own property, they are fair game. Quit feeding them and I won't have to be the bad guy.
3,152 1:28 pm PDT, Oct 16 Ashley Winkler Corpus Christi Texas
3,151 7:33 am PDT, Oct 13 Carlton Scott   North Carolina I came up hard and killed squirrel to eat. There is no better wild meat. Especially when it is fried and simmered in gravy. They also give brunswick stew a great different taste. Altho I don't hunt them like I did when I was young I would be totally against a closed season.

Petition for a Closed Season on Squirrel Hunting

The state of Texas, which prides itself with what is believed to have excellent conservation practices, should not be so proud. From what I have been told about hunting, hunters help other animals from starvation by culling off some of their herd. This is not the case with squirrels, in fact it is the opposite. There is no closed season on squirrel hunting in the state of Texas, and that means baby squirrels are starving to death, a death far worse than a bullet.
