Fight Trump's Attack on Our Public Lands

Donald Trump just declared war on our public lands. He's issued an executive order targeting 27 national monuments that include more than 1 billion acres of America's most cherished natural and cultural wonders.

It's outrageous - Trump wants to see these beautiful places fracked, mined and exploited to further enrich his corporate buddies, but we're not going to let that happen.

Trump's order directs the Interior Department to review the designation of every monument larger than 100,000 acres that's been protected since 1996. His ultimate goal is to turn these magnificent places over to special interests like coal, mining, fracking and logging.

More than 25 national monuments are now under attack, from Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears national monuments in Utah to vast marine areas in the Pacific and Caribbean.

Take action: Tell your representatives and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke you treasure our national monuments and urge them to fight any effort to dismantle these iconic public lands.
Dear [Representative],

I am writing to urge you to do everything you can to oppose efforts by the Trump administration to weaken protections, change boundaries or rescind designations for any national monument. Over the past 20 years, presidents from both political parties have used the Antiquities Act to protect some of our nation's greatest natural and cultural treasures, both on land and in the marine environment. Now Trump wants to weaken protections for these monuments just to benefit special interests that seek to destroy these lands to enrich themselves.

[Your comment will be added here]

From Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears national monuments in Utah to vast marine areas in the Pacific and Caribbean, national monuments designated over the past two decades are now targeted for destruction. This is morally wrong and represents the worst type of government, favoring big business and the profits of a select few over the people of this country.

Imagine that this same, cynical ploy had been used to attack other national monuments in the past 100 years -- the Grand Canyon would have been dammed. Olympic National Park would have been stripped of its old-growth forests. And Denali National Park would have been mined. Dozens of our nation's most treasured national parks were first protected as national monuments. If Trump cared about the environment, he'd be urging Congress to further protect these national monuments by passing laws to turn them into national parks. Instead he's signing an unprecedented number of anti-environmental executive orders to destroy our public lands and enrich his powerful friends.

America's national monuments offer countless recreation opportunities to millions of people each year. They support local economies and protect wildlife populations. And they preserve American Indian cultural artifacts and help keep our air and water cleaner.

That's why I urge you to oppose any efforts to weaken a single monument. I ask that you fight any effort to rescind protections or shrink a designation by a single acre. If Trump is successful, it will open the floodgates to more attacks on public lands and set a horrible precedent for generations to come.

Sincerely,

[Your name]
