Protect the Endangered Species Act

Target: President Barack Obama
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund

For more than 30 years, the Endangered Species Act has protected wildlife at the brink of extinction. From our national symbol, the bald eagle, to grizzlies, wolves and California condors, our nation's wildlife continue to survive in the wild thanks to these protections.

But the Bush administration tried to make a last ditch effort to undermine the Endangered Species Act. Currently, federal agencies are required to consult with expert scientists at US Fish and Wildlife or National Marine Fisheries Service to ensure proposed actions will not jeopardize threatened or endangered wildlife. But the Bush administration tried to remove this fundamental check and balance, putting wildlife in harm's way.

We owe it to our children and grandchildren to be good stewards of the environment and leave behind a legacy of protecting endangered species and the special places they call home. Please sign our petition urging President Obama to stop the previous administration's last ditch efforts to undermine the Endangered Species Act.

Good news! President Barack Obama vowed to let science guide decisions at the Department of the Interior, and recognized the vital role of the Endangered Species Act in protecting America’s imperiled wildlife (read White House press release).

Thank you for your interest. This petition is now closed.

Dear President Obama,

As a Defenders of Wildlife supporter and someone who cares deeply about the recovery of endangered wildlife, I am writing to voice my opposition to the Bush/Cheney Administration's eleventh-hour changes to the Endangered Species Act (ESA) regulations that would eliminate vital checks and balances that protect threatened and endangered wildlife.

The changes strike at the very heart of this landmark conservation bill, undermining the protection of polar bears, wolves and the nearly 1,400 other wildlife species now safeguarded by the ESA.

These changes will severely limit the ability of wildlife experts in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to protect imperiled wildlife by eliminating crucial interagency consultations on project decisions that may affect endangered or threatened species. It also prevents expert agencies from considering how greenhouse gas emissions from new projects could impact polar bears, lynx and other wildlife that may go extinct due to global warming.
We signed the “Protect the Endangered Species Act” petition!

This is a cause I believe in firmly. Protection of Endangered Species is more important then anyone in goverment seems to realize. My dream is to work to help save Endangered Species around the world. I'm not sure how to take an active role because I am only a young teenager not even the age of 18 yet. Letting animals die because of our selfish and distructive behavior is disgusting. Palin allowing aerial wolf killings to continue and nobody punishing her or stopping her is horrible. What kind of example are you as our President sending when you do nothing to protect the animals of this Earth. You already continue the war and plan to end it two years from now, how dare you speak for change and do nothing? You might have had my respect but you are slowly loosing it with every step you take doing nothing for the enviroment or the world. America may be it's own country but as a country you should help other countries or at least respect them enough help some cause. Help the Endangered Species. Do you want to watch animals die because of your inability to take action?

I support the ESA because it helps draw a small line in the sand so that the rich and powerful can't just do as they please...God please bless the USA.

It is incredibly important that we preserve all life on this precious planet. These beautiful animals have no voice, so we must stand up for them to ensure their survival.

No more extinctions. Please listen to the scientific experts (the ones with no vested financial interest in potentially negative actions against threatened species).

What happens to Wildlife globally affects us all. It is our duty to prevent the extinction of any MORE of our species, from a moral and ethical stand point.

I support the Endangered Species Act because it is saving the animals of the Earth. These animals were here long before any of us and it is not our place to destroy the world they know so well. Do not continue to allow the destruction of these species.

Although I am not a U.S. citizen, what happens in America has global impacts. Loss of biodiversity, in any part of the world, affects us all. We are all citizens of the planet and we owe it to the planet, to its wildlife, to future generations and to ourselves, to take good care of the amazing diversity of life around us.

I think it'd be a shame if certain animals were completely wiped out because of our previous administration's laziness in wanting to consult in anyone outside of their inner circle. I wish people who were in support of this bill would imagine if the humans were massively outnumbered by a species superior on the food chain and didn't have a tremendous future outlook.
