Call Off the Stray Dog Massacre in Sochi! Use part of the $50 billion Olympic budget for shelters

  • by: Alyssa Engel

When Socci, Russia was selected to hold the 2014 Olympics, there was preexisting contention regarding the city’s stray dog population.  In 2013, they announced their plan to exterminate the city’s stray dogs, but the plan was quickly nixed after public outcry.  In April of 2013, organizers of the 2014 Sochi Olympics had publically declared a humane solution: to create shelters to house the stray dogs in preparation for the event.

With the Olympics only days away, the organizers of the event have gone back on their word and implemented their plan to slaughter the stray dogs in the city in preparation for the 2014 Winter Olympics.  The dogs are being slaughtered in mass culls (many reports of dogs suffering from poison).  The city has hired a pest control firm, Basya Services, owned by Alexei Sorokin to slaughter the dogs on the site where the Olympics are to be held.  Sorokin told ABC News: “These dogs are biological trash.”

At this time, many people are calling on President Putin to reevaluate the decision to exterminate these innocent creatures.  The IOC (International Olympic Committee), the committee responsible for selecting the host city and coordinating the event, also needs to keep up there end of the bargain.  They need to call off the slaughter immediately.  Within their $50 billion budget (the largest Olympic budget to date) they need to find room to create humane shelters for the stray dogs, as promised in 2013.

We petition the International Olympic Committee to immediately call off the mass stray dog culls in Sochi, Russia as relates to the 2014 Winter Olympics, and create humane shelters to house these dogs.

In April of 2013, we were assured shelters would be created in preparation of the event.  In lieu of these shelters, the dogs have been (and are being) slaughtered in the name of the Olympics. The Sochi Olympics have an enormous $50 billion budget.  Some of the budget needs to be allocated (or reallocated if need be) to create these shelters.

The International Olympic Committee for the 2014 Sochi Olympics needs to immediately call off the mass slaughter of stray dogs and exercise their influence to terminate the city contract with Basya Services.  They need to provide the humane dog shelters they promised.

Update #110 years ago
We have reached 2,000 signatures! The Olympics is in full swing, and focus is gradually fading on our four legged friends in Sochi. We need to let the Olympic Organizing Committee know that we are not giving up. Stop murdering the the dogs and create shelters. Please keep sharing!
