Install a Traffic Light at the Intersection of East 10th Street and Copper Beech Way, and Reduce Speed on East 10th Street Near Copper Beach and 33 East

We are petitioning the North Carolina Department of Transportation to install a traffic light on East 10th Street while reducing the speed limit at the entrance of Copper Beech and 33 East. Both rental communities house 2,288 people which creates an influx of motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic. This a very dangerous area which resulted in a tragic accident causing the fatality of Samuel Matthew Mayo on October 18, 2015. He was a 19 year old sophomore attending ECU, majoring in Engineering.

A traffic light and reducing the speed limit at this location would demand more attention from both drivers and pedestrians which would increase awareness in this statistically dangerous intersection. Ultimately, we are wanting to decrease accidents and fatalities, like what has happened with Samuel Matthew Mayo, so that no one else has to go through such a tragedy like this. This will give everyone and their families a sense of safety and security.

This has been a need for several years and we hope that you will support this request. With your leadership and support for a traffic light and reduced speed at the entrance of Copper Beech and 33 East, our neighborhood will have the appropriate traffic control for all of today's conditions.

Thank you for taking the time to read and sign this petition.

Respectfully, the Mayo Family, Copper Beech Townhomes, 33 East, University Manor, Sunchase
