Protest Bush Administration's Misuse of Science

What do 60 of the world's most influential scientists* have in common?
They all agree that the Bush administration has systematically distorted scientific fact to meet its political goals on issues ranging from military intelligence to health to the environment and more.
* Including 20 Nobel laureates, 19 recipients of the National Medal of Science and two former Republican presidential advisors.

According to these scientists, President Bush and his administration have:
  • deliberately stacked advisory panels with political appointees
  • censored and disregarded government scientists and reports when they conflict with the administration's political goals
  • disbanded scientific panels whose advice conflicted with Bush administration policies.
Even worse, a recent Pentagon report leaked to the British press predicts that abrupt climate change could bring the planet to the edge of anarchy as countries develop a nuclear threat to defend and secure dwindling food, water and energy supplies. Thus far, the President has skirted all global attempts to curb the phenomenon and until recently denied that global warming was real.

Help maintain public trust in sound science and its implementation in public policy. Urge your representatives to insist that congressional science committees investigate.
Dear Senator/Representative:

I am very concerned about the Bush administration’s manipulation of and disregard for science to meet its conservative political agenda.

More than 60 leading scientists, including 20 Nobel laureates, 19 recipients of the National Medal of Science and two former Republican presidential advisors, recently issued an open letter stating that this administration has systematically distorted fact to meet its political goals on the environment, health, biomedical research, and nuclear weapons both at home and abroad.

The administration has repeatedly suppressed and censored reports by its own scientists and stacked advisory panels with political appointees. This behavior is not only outrageous – it is dangerous, and threatens not only our environment and health, but our national security and international relations.

President Bush and his administration must restore the integrity of science in the policy-making process. I urge you to take this report and the words of our leading scientists very seriously. Do all that you can to ensure that qualified scientists, not industry insiders, give direction to our nations policies.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your response.
