Email this PetitionThe North Park Village Nature Center (5801 N. Pulaski Rd.) has applied for the first deer kill permit within city limits and plans to bring sharpshooters into the park as early as September. They claim that the deer are overpopulated for the center’s acreage but have never shown that the deer actually reside there exclusively rather than in the forest preserve and cemeteries in the larger surrounding community. They also claim that the deer have destroyed trees and plants on their grounds, but have never quantified how much or explored simpler alternatives like fencing the affected trees or adding deer-friendly plantings.
We believe that the deer are a community resource and that the center has excluded us from the process of defining the issues, and if necessary, determining how to resolve them. Whether you are a park user, local resident, or concerned member of the community at large, please join us in taking action to preserve our deer.

Besides the dog whelping in agonizing pain until it dies, which was witnessed by the owners of the dog - the hunter with no regard for the animal or it's owner - took off! Is that what you want in our town also? I ask who will be held legally responsible for any human who gets hit with a stray arrow while enjoying nature and walking in the in our woods? Bow hunting is among the cruelest forms of hunting. Many deer who are shot are merely wounded by arrows. Bow hunters routinely spend hours tracking the blood trails of deer struck by arrows before finding them. Three decades of research tells us that for every one or two animals struck by arrows and retrieved by bow hunters, another wounded animal disappears, never to be found. Please halt the bow hunting to kill deer and instead push for long-term deer-management methods that are more effective and humane. I would like to see birth control in a salt lick if possible, this is more safe for both the deer and humans. |

Deer sharpshooters- hunters are "Cowards" killing defenseless animals. I guess they have nothing better to do to prove their skills and manhood! Of course they are "paid" to perform this tragic event. Blaming deer for car accidents is moronic.Speed and carelessness causes most accidents. I have many times saved deer on the side of the road just by slowing down and not flashing bright car lights at deer while driving.Enforcing speed limits and education and teaching children and adults that deer are precious as all wildlife is, should be of utmost importance to everyone. Sterilization and relocation are good alternatives.When we continue to upset the balance of nature by killing off innocent animals and wildlife the long range effects are frightening and devastating. Write to your congressman and state representatives to take heed and stop this tragic event -(deer kill,hunting in our parks) from happening altogether. |

Save Our Deer
Deer and other urban wildlife are a valuable part of our community. We believe that the North Park Village Nature Center's deer-kill policy is inconsistent with North Park Village's environmental platform, and that sharpshooters or other violent means of deer removal are at odds with the spirit of the City of Chicago's anti-gun ordinances. We call for the withdrawal of North Park Village's deer-kill permit application and the ongoing preservation of our local deer.
