In northern Arizona sits one of the wonders of the world. The Grand Canyon's mile-deep gorge can be seen from space, and its rugged landscape and wild river are a testament to the richness and the wildness of this nation's public lands. People travel from all over the globe to experience this natural splendor; it is an American treasure and an international delight.
But it is threatened. The greater Grand Canyon region – its waters, its landscape, its sacred and cultural treasures, and its countless opportunities for outdoor recreation and spiritual renewal – lies just 6 miles from uranium mines.

In 1918, the Grand Canyon was designated the 15th U.S. national park. This action set aside a special landscape for future generations but overlooked the need to safeguard the larger watershed of the park, to ensure that the waters of the Grand Canyon are forever protected as well.
Irresponsible mining and clear-cutting activities threaten to pollute the Colorado River and its underground springs – a clean water supply relied upon by millions of people downstream – and to harm the wildlife that depend upon this area.
We have a responsibility and a duty to protect this treasured landscape for future generations.

But sitting just 6 miles from uranium mining, this region and its sacred and cultural treasures are threatened.
Permanently designating the Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument would boost the local economy, protect historic sites, and conserve clean drinking water sources for local communities and wildlife.
