Keep Foster Children Off the Street

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: Covenant House

One in five foster children grow up to be homeless adults. Many of these children are forced to leave their homes due to physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse, but the state child welfare systems responsible for their well-being lack the tools needed to meet their complex needs.

The Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act attempts to break the vicious cycle that disconnects these children from the help they need. The act supports these young people by: strengthening federal child welfare systems, extending their access to support services, and amending the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program to improve access to benefits.

Every child deserves a chance to succeed no matter where they grow up or who raises them. Urge your senators to support S.2560, the Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act.

Why is it important to help foster children transition to adulthood?
We respect your privacy. Your email address is used to confirm your signature and is NOT displayed publicly.
Dear Senator [Last Name]:

Right now, one-fifth of foster children grow up to be homeless adults.

Many of these children are compelled to leave home due to severe family conflict, parental mental illness, or physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. Also, many of the young people who enter foster care age out at 18-years old with little or no support for their transition to the adult world. For youth struggling to responsibly care for children of their own, the challenges are even greater.

Clearly, the state child welfare systems responsible for the safety and protection of these young people often lack the tools to meet their complex needs, which is why I urge your support for the S.2560, the Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act.

The Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act gives more support to foster families, foster children, and young adults transitioning from the foster care system into adulthood by:

We need to treat these children as part of our own family and take care of them properly. We need to help them live safely while gaining job skills and education.

Foster children need education, clothing, shelter, and food. Everyone human being needs those four things to live independently. Foster children are thrown from home to home and treated differently by every foster parent. This movement could cause a child to feel isolated and never connect with any foster relation. When foster children have problems, they need our support in place of that their absentee parents. This child needs help the same as anyone else.

As a former fosterchild, street kid, I know these children had no control as to who they were born to nor were they responsable for the abuse they suffered. By the time they find fostercare these children have already suffered more than the average person, we need to help their pain end and their lives to begin. Many are placed in abusive foster homes and are doubley abused but if the complain are not heard. It is high time that our Governments wake up and help these children, give them hope and self worth. If you cannot relate with them then leave your friends, beautiful homes and three meals a day, and try sleeping in alleyways, cold culverts, graineries or under piles of leaves to try and keep warm, don't worry about wild animals or stray dogs, or where your next meal will come from- there are always dumpsters behind resturants. And don't forget to feel hopeless and of no value- knowing no one cares...... what if these children were yours? I have news for you- they are yours, and mine and all of ours- all they ask for is respect and a chance to survive, and maybe a little love thrown in for good measure.

Children are the future. One of those children that are left on the streets may have end up saving the world. If we do not help them, they cannot accomplish what they are meant to. Give them a chance to accomplish their dreams.

It makes more sense to help them become productive members of society. Help them make the transition to adulthood. It's not their fault they've had to rely on government services.
