Ask Congress To Give Our Reproductive Rights Back

On Monday, the Supreme Court showed the country that it will use any excuse possible to deny women the right to control what they do with their bodies.

The Affordable Care Act made it possible for people of all ages to prioritize if and when they want to raise a family by mandating that companies include birth control in their health insurance plans. Now, in its 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court has determined that private, closely held companies can opt out of that provision based on religious objections.

This decision has implications that go way beyond today's case. Currently, 49 companies are trying to deny their employees the chance to access full medical care based on nothing but moral objections, and more will surely come out of the woodwork.

Birth control isn't just used for contraceptive purposes. Many women also use it to treat endometriosis, hormonal imbalances or other medical issues. Now, they'll be forced to pay hundreds of dollars for something that should, by all rights, be legally granted to them, because their employer finds the idea of them having a say over their bodies, health or safety to be distasteful.

We can't let the Supreme Court keep gutting reproductive rights under the guise of "freedom." Since its ruling was based on the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), a statute passed by Congress, it's Congress' turn to fight back.
