#RiseUp Stop ICE From Destroying Documents About Serious Abuses in its Prisons!

Since the beginning of the year, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has significantly stepped up the detention and deportation of immigrants in the U.S. First, they began rounding up those without criminal records, but more recently they have been exposed as even deporting those who are in the country legally.

ICE is not only breaking the law but it is violating individuals’ inalienable human rights by destroying lives and families.

Now ICE wants federal approval to destroy a variety of documents on people they hold in their prisons, including reports on sexual assaults and deaths. With ICE becoming much more active, they need to be more – not less – transparent about their activities.

The National Archives and Record Administration (NARA) has indicated that they will approve ICE’s request. However, we still have time to tell NARA officials that this is simply unacceptable and that these records must be retained – what purpose is there in their destruction other than to cover up human rights abuses?
