Fight Trump's Muslim ban

The time since Donald Trump's inauguration as President of the United States has been chilling.

And recently, the horrific effects of hate rocked our own country with the terrorist attack on the mosque in Sainte-Foy.

It is clear that it is more important than ever for each and every one of us to stand up against hate.

The attack in Sainte-Foy came a day after Donald Trump's disgusting and terrifying Muslim ban took effect in the United States. On that first day, the consequences were horrifying. Refugees fleeing war, violence and persecution were turned away at the border. Families were split up. Promising researchers and students were barred from institutions where they work to advance science and knowledge. Most dismaying though was that a group of people was singled out and treated as uniformly threatening, untrustworthy and lesser because of their faith.

Let's be clear — the recent executive order by President Trump banning Muslim immigration and refugees is stunning in its brazenness, clearly racist in origin, damaging to the lives of real people, and has undoubtedly made the world a more dangerous place for us all.

We are susceptible to the effects of its abhorrent creed here in Canada. We must fight back. Let's come together to urge Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to stand against hate with definitive leadership and action.

Dear Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Ahmed Hussen,

The recent executive order by President Trump banning Muslim immigrants and refugees is stunning in its brazenness, clearly racist in origin, damaging to the lives of real people, and has undoubtedly made the world a more dangerous place for us all.

I am calling on you to take the following steps immediately:

1. Publicly denounce the executive order in explicit terms.

2. Lift the current cap on private sponsorship of refugees.

3. After clearance, offer status to those stranded by the executive order.

4. Immediately suspend the Safe Third Country Agreement with the United States.

We need more than words at this time. We need definitive leadership and action to stand up against this bigotry.
