Tell Retailers and Banks to Make Credit Cards More Secure

  • by: Consumers Union

The plastic in our pockets could be much more secure. Payment cards with embedded microchips have dramatically cut fraud and protected consumers in other parts of the world for years -- but not here at home.

Why? Because many retailers, credit card companies and banks don’t want to take on the expense of updating their cards, security systems, card readers, and computers.

In the wake of its huge data breach, Target has volunteered to upgrade. But it won’t work as well until the entire retail and banking sector makes the change. That's why this consumer petition to the National Retail Federation and the American Banker Association is so important -- most every major retailer and bank is a member, and it’s the best place to exert pressure.

Sign on to our petition, and we will deliver your statement to the leaders of these organizations. If we exert enough pressure, the whole industry can change!
Dear [Decision Maker],

In the wake of the Target and Neiman Marcus security breaches, it's time the National Retail Federation and American Bankers Association step up and demand that all your members immediately invest in more secure card protections for shoppers.

American consumers deserve the same protections against debit and credit card fraud as those in other parts of the world. I ask that you make sure all your members immediately invest in chip-and-pin technology, which helps protect my sensitive financial information.

Retailers and credit card companies in other countries have made the switch to this more secure technology. The U.S. must do the same without delay, because it's me, the consumer, who gets stuck with the consequences.

Sincerely,
