Save Humpback Whales! Reduce Demand for Shrimp

Every year, about 7,000 humpback whales migrate to the coastal waters of Antongil Bay in northeastern Madagascar to breed and calve.

At the same time, large trawling boats in the bay use huge nets to sift through the sea and catch fish and other marine life. Those that target shrimp for export are particularly detrimental to the area because of their impact on the sea floor and their high level of "bycatch," the fish, turtles and marine mammals that get caught in trawlers' nets. There are often five times as many of these "bystander" victims as there are shrimp in each haul.

These and other largely unregulated operations represent a growing threat to Antongil Bay's wildlife--including the humpback whales who migrate there to calve.

How can you help humpback whales and all of the marine life that visit and live in Antongil Bay? Choose to not eat shrimp that often, or eliminate it from your diet altogether. Take the pledge today!
The Pledge: I pledge to make a difference for humpback whales by reducing the amount of shrimp I eat or by eliminating shrimp from my diet. By not eating shrimp, you'll lessen the worldwide demand for this product and help reduce damaging and unsustainable fishing practices. This, in turn, will make Antongil Bay, and other important marine ecosystems, more hospitable for whales and all marine life. Note: If you already do not eat shrimp, pledge to share this action with at least one person and ask them to help us protect ocean wildlife too!
