Dear [Government Decision Maker],

I am writing to urge you to support the adoption of a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare by the United Nations.

Billions of animals around the world are affected by humans, and rely on people to treat them with compassion. But sadly, in many countries there is little national and no international protection for animals.

An international agreement on welfare standards should become a key goal for the animal welfare movement in the 21st century. The first step toward achieving this end would be to secure a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare at the United Nations.

A Universal Declaration by the UN would:

- Recognize animals as sentient beings, capable of suffering and experiencing pain
- Recognize that animal welfare is an issue of importance as a part of the social development of nations
- Act as a catalyst for better animal welfare provisions worldwide

because the animal cruelty around the world especially in the poorest parts i.e west africa needs to be monitored and helped. i travel regulary to the gambia and i do my bit to help in the animal welfare regime there but more does need doing

animals DESERVE international protection. They have helped us in so many ways, theyve helped us find many vaccines regardless of the fact that they dont even have a say in it. We may be higher than them in intelligence and power, but that is no excuse.

Animal cruelty makes me sad and furious to no end. I fail to understand how people can torture them like they do in some countries. What makes people think that animals do not have feelings and a soul? As an owner of two dogs, I can tell you that they CAN feel! The joy they greet me with whenever I come home or downstairs is just incredible. I sometimes wish that those who torture animals would suffer the exactly same things done to them. Stop the cruelty!
