Oppose globalization / environmental destruction in Chile

A Canadian mining company has planned to build a aluminum plan in the Aisen region of Chile. The Aisen region is a pristine environment and its residents have pledged to foster sustainable development to preserve it's natural resources. The proposed aluminum plant would ruin both the unspoiled environment and the local's plans for sustainability.
We, the undersigned, urge you to reject Noranda, Inc.’s proposed Alumysa project, which involves construction of a large aluminum smelter in the Aisen region of Chile. The Aisen region is a pristine environment; local residents have declared it to be a “Reserve of Life” and have pledged to foster “just, sustainable and equitable” development.

The Alumysa project would irreparably damage both the unspoiled environment of Aisen and the development goals of its people. The project would result in the construction of three dams that would submerge 24,000 acres of forests, lakes, and wetlands, according to the Aisen “Reserve of Life” Alliance. The Alliance also reports that the aluminum smelter would generate approximately 660,000 tons of toxic waste (containing such chemicals as fluorides, cyanide, and arsenic) annually. Some of this waste is expected to leak into ground water and streams. In addition, the plant would emit various air pollutants that have been identified as causing cancer, global warming, and acid rain.

The people of Aisen would gain virtually nothing from this environmentally destructive project. The aluminum produced from the plant would be exported to foreign countries. Only about six percent of the US $470 million that the plant is projected to generate will remain in Aisen, according to the “Reserve of Life” Alliance. Also, only about 100 people (or approximately .1% of the total Aisen population) will be employed by the plant after construction is finished. The people of Aisen fear that this plant would set a dangerous precedent for future unsustainable development of their homeland for the benefit of global corporations.

We urge you to support the people of Aisen in their quest to make Aisen a “Reserve of Life” and to foster sustainable development in Chile. Please reject Noranda’s Alumysa project, which would ruin the economic and environmental value of Aisen.
