We urge the SCRD to implement Pesticide Bylaws to regulate the use of pesticides for cosmetic purposes on private properties.

The following concerned citizens urge the SCRD to adopt bylaw policies in line with the District of Sechelt and Town of Gibsons when it comes to Pesticides. Both the Sechelt & Gibsons Municipalities have recognized that environmental protection is a fundamental value of the Coast's citizens and to promote the health of the Sunshine Coast's citizens avoiding unnecessary exposure to pesticides is paramount. We urge the SCRD to request powers from the province to be able to implement Pesticide Bylaws to regulate the use of pesticides for cosmetic purposes on private properties.

Pesticides can contain environmental carcinogens, which are known to increase the risk of cancer. There is growing scientific evidence linking pesticide exposure to both adult and childhood cancers, according to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Given mounting scientific evidence that neonicotinoids are toxic to bees and threaten both individual and population survival, the continued use of Roundup as well as systemic neonicotinoid insecticides not only threatens the lives of bees, but our entire system of agriculture. Without bees to pollinate our food crops, there will be no food and without food we cannot survive.

With the SCRD's new initiative to establish a food sustainable Coast, we would think this would be a necessary policy to adapt to protect our food production. We believe this action would demonstrate the SCRD's commitment to sustainability and protecting declining bee populations upon which our food supply and flowering plants depend. Informative brochures similar to the brochures provided by the District of Sechelt (attached) could aid the SCRD in Educating People on the many effective alternatives to using harsh chemicals. And with the SCRD's support, we would be well on our way to creating a healthy, sustainable Sunshine Coast, something to truly be proud of.
