Tell Congress to Get Serious About Toxics Reform
Last year Senator Kay Hagan and Senator Richard Burr co-sponsored a bipartisan bill (the Chemical Safety Improvement Act, Senate Bill 1009) and raised hopes that chemical policy reform could finally be a reality.
Even though this bill has strong bipartisan support, as drafted S1009 does not deliver on the critical elements of meaningful toxics reform. Among its other problems, the bill leaves off strong protections for pregnant women, children, and vulnerable communities. We need your help to urge our U.S. Senators to improve this bill.
Tell Senator Hagan and Senator Burr that real toxic reform would include these improvements to S1009:
-- More protections for pregnant women, children and vulnerable communities who are most at risk.
-- Allow states to maintain their own chemical safety laws when the federal government doesn’t get the job done.
-- Remove the red tape on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that prevents them from regulating dangerous chemicals.
-- Prioritize the worst chemicals and determine deadlines for EPA so that they know what to focus on and when.
Send a message to Senators Hagan and Burr and urge them to stand up for real toxics reform by improving S1009.
