Family planning saves lives and empowers women. Yet today, there are 225 million women in developing countries who want to be able to decide for themselves if and when to have children but lack access to modern contraception.
Every two minutes, a woman dies from complications during pregnancy and childbirth. For every woman who dies, an average of four children are left behind without their mother, communities lose leaders, and economies are depleted without women in the workforce.
We know we can change this. In fact, 98% of these deaths are preventable. If every woman has access to family planning and quality maternal and newborn health care, we can avert 110 million unintended pregnancies, we can save nearly 3 million babies from dying within their first year, and we can prevent nearly 70% of deaths from childbirth-related complications. Simply put: With access to contraception, women can lead healthy lives and have healthier children.
Pledge to speak up, sing out, shout out loud that every woman deserves the right to access family planning, regardless of where she lives.
