Stop $600 Million in Foster Care Cuts - Action Needed Immediately

Target: U.S. House of Representatives
Sponsored by: American Humane Association
On Wednesday, February 1st, Congress will vote on the budget reconciliation bill, which may cut $600 million in foster care and other pro-family programs. These cuts include funding for programs that children and families depend on, including Medicaid, child support enforcement, and student assistance.

These children are defenseless against political whims, and this is our last opportunity to protect America's children.

Title IV-E Foster Care is a vital safety net for America's children. This financing is used for programs that ensure children receive the care they need, and to assist children who have been abused or neglected. Furthermore, programs designed to intervene before at risk children are forced to enter the foster care system will be severely impacted.

The true cost of these cuts will be in the lives of children - those who are already the most vulnerable. Those children will suffer from the lack of safe, nurturing foster care simply because relatives and others who love them can no longer afford to care for them. Those children may be separated from loved ones, important programs will be damaged, and children with special needs wonÂ’t receive appropriate treatment.

This vote will be extremely close and this is the last opportunity to tell your Representative in Congress not to desert America's children.

Dear Rep. [Your Congressional Representative],

As your constituent and as a concerned citizen, I urge you to oppose the budget reconciliation bill as long as it includes cuts to federal foster care funding. The massive cuts in the Senate-approved version of the bill are cruel and threaten the ability of our nation’s foster care system to continue to provide children with the care they need.

The bill must represent our country’s concerns and priorities regarding child safety and well-being. The current reconciliation bill contains more than $600 million in cuts to federal foster care programs. The bill would slash funding for programs that support children being cared for by grandparents and other relatives, impose inflexible eligibility requirements for federal aid that would deny aid to many children in need, and damage programs that are designed to support children in hospitals and juvenile facilities. Such provisions are short-sighted and will have disastrous consequences for children, families, and our future.

Please support our state’s and our nation’s children and families by opposing the budget reconciliation bill until the cuts to foster care funding are removed. I look forward to your leadership and action on this important issue.

Sincerely,

Foster children are a tremendously at risk population. Please do not make their lives any more difficult than they already are by cutting aid to programs that assist them.

As a foster parent with children in my home I can not imagine making any cuts anywhere. What right does anyone have to deny these children of anything more in there lives. They need the money in this state to allow them to become successful adults or we will be repeating the same problem.

The children in foster care deserve our support & complete funding. And we need more money to hire sufficient Child Protective Service workers.

I have been a Foster Parent, due to budget cutbacks my child was unable to receive all the benefits she needed to assist her in becoming a responsible adult. There are to many foster children who need besides a home many additional services that cannot be provided except at the expense of the Foster Parent. Many Foster homes/parents are already at poverty level and can barely afford their own family survival. Add the burden of another to care for and decrease the benefits for the foster child; this then becomes a criminal act for the poor foster child. Remember more lower socio-economic families take in foster children not wealthy.

Where would these children be without the selfless people who welcome them into their homes and give them a roof over their heads, food on their plate and most importantly - unconditional love.

Those children without parents belong to all of us. We must provide for them in the form of funding to meet their needs. These are the future lawyers, construction workers, doctors, chefs, and senators. We need them to have solid families and education. Do not allow these funds to be cut. Bring our young men and women back from Iraq and use the money where it will make a real difference.

What, I ask, do you know about High Fructose Corn Syrup, HFCS? The widespread use of this product, a result of excess corn production, plays a major role in risk factors related to pre-diabetic conditions in children and adults. And, diabetes, as you MUST know, is epidemic. HFCS is a cheap sweetner that adds enzymes to corn syrup and thus converts the glucose into fructose. Because HFCS is cheaper than cane sugar, the use of this product has increased ten fold. Generally associated with soft drinks, this product is found increasingly in many foods that are processed, and these include juices, jams, condiments (katsup) and more. The over-consumption of refined carbhoydrates contributes to those conditions that lead to the inability of the body to manage insulin, to weight gain, obesity, risk of diabetes, and much more. I urge you to take right action now for our children and youth.

If this nation can afford Billions of Dollars for a non-winnable war, and for tax cuts for Corporations and Billionaires/Millionaires, then we should be able to spend millions on future members of our society to help them to become GOOD members of the society.

Makes good sense to promote "pro-life" agenda, yet cut aid to poor children. Cut education funding so that I as a poor, single person struggling to take care of my family, struggling to get an education so that I can reach the so called "American Dream", yet this administration cuts funding to help me and other citizens of this country achieve that goal. Funding such as child support enforcement, education spending, medicaid and now foster care. All these cuts effect real people, and I am one of those real people. The hypocrisy of the right is unbelievable.
