Tell Congress: Don't Let Trump Dismantle Chemical Safety

We cheered when President Obama signed a law, passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, that updates America's chemical safety policy for the first time in 40 years. It finally gives teeth to a toothless old law that failed to protect Americans from toxic chemicals. But a law is only as good as its implementation—and all of that is now at risk.

President Trump has pledged to essentially dismantle the Environmental Protection Agency—and has claimed even asbestos is "100 percent safe, once applied," and that it just "got a bad rap." But as EPA now begins to ensure the safety of the thousands of chemicals in use as well as hundreds more that enter the market every year, we need to make sure the agency itself is protected and fully funded. It's the only way this groundbreaking environmental law will deliver on its promises.

Take action today, and tell Congress to provide the resources and preserve the authority EPA needs to tackle this critical problem.

Please ensure the new bipartisan chemical safety law is protected.

Dear [Decision Maker],

I'm pleased Congress overwhelmingly supported strong chemical safety reform for the first time in 40 years, with the passage of the bipartisan Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety Act. But as the transition to a new administration begins, I am concerned about the future of this groundbreaking law.

In 2016, Republicans and Democrats, as well as industry and public health advocates, came together to strengthen protections from toxic chemicals. But a law is only as good as its implementation, and the Environmental Protection Agency needs to have the resources and be able to use its new authority to ensure the safety of the thousands of chemicals in use as well as hundreds more that enter the market every year. In order for this law to succeed, and for Americans to truly be protected from dangerous chemicals that cause serious illnesses like cancer, infertility, and Parkinson's, EPA's chemical safety program needs to be fully funded, and the agency's authority under the law needs to be protected.

In the days ahead, please protect EPA from any attacks, budget or otherwise, that could hinder its ability to implement the strongest possible chemical safety system.

Update #17 years ago
Tomorrow (1/18/2017), President-elect Trump's pick to for EPA Administrator, Scott Pruitt, will face the Senate for his hearing. We need to make sure his questionable ethics are a part of the conversation. Activists like you have been phoning their senators to oppose President-elect Trump's pick to run the EPA — will you join them? Make the call before it's too late: Tell your Senators to question Pruitt's hazy ethics and oppose his nomination.
