Support the PAW Act - End Alaska's Aerial Hunting Program!

Target: U.S. House of Representatives
Sponsored by: Care2.com

So far, more than 1,000 wolves have been chased down by gunmen in low-flying aircraft and killed with high-powered rifles. This year alone, at least 232 wolves have been killed – putting the 2008/2009 aerial wolf killing season on pace to become the deadliest in years.

In just a few weeks, Congressman George Miller will re-introduce the Protect America's Wildlife (PAW) Act, federal legislation to end the controversial practice of using aircraft and gunmen to chase and kill wolves in Alaska.

It's time to stop aerial hunting once and for all. Sign the petition below to urge your Representative to sign on as an original co-sponsor of Representative George Miller's re-introduced PAW Act to help end this awful practice in Alaska and prevent it from spreading to places like the Northern Rockies.

deadline: 12-31-2009

Re: Please Co-Sponsor the Protect America's Wildlife Act in the 111th Congress

Dear [Decision Maker],

As one of your constituents and someone who cares about protecting wildlife, I urge you to sign on as an original cosponsor of Representative George Miller's soon-to-be introduced Protect America's Wildlife Act, federal legislation to end the controversial practice of using aircraft and gunmen to chase and kill wolves in Alaska.

Officials in Alaska have flouted the intent of the Federal Airborne Hunting Act that Congress passed in 1972 and perpetuated a scientifically unfounded aerial wolf killing program.

This brutal practice has been condemned by wildlife biologists, hunters and conservationists from Alaska and around the world... and with good cause.

One of the most absurd arguments is that of needing to hunt wolves from helicopters so that human hunters will have more game to shoot and kill. The game that wolves go after is not the same game that humans go after. Wolves take the weak and the old and the young, not the strong bucks that we like to mount on our walls. If you take out a natural predator, you will ruin an ecosystem. The practice of shooting wolves from aircraft is cowardly, unnecessary, barbaric, arrogant, and completely repulsive.

It's unfortunate to think you create a law to protect mother nature, including animals! (we are all part of the same earthling family!) for the sake of saying there's such a law, but really isn't practiced. What does this say about our government? What other laws do they have out there protecting people, but really aren't? If they do it to innocent animals, who's to say they're not doing the same thing with us HUMANS?!

These much maligned animals should be studied for their familial structure and cooperation, not shot. In video footage shot for "bragging" rights by Alaskan Fish and Wildlife managers in addition to blood sport, it has been demonstrated that where wolves are erradicated, there are then too many moose--beyond sustanability. It's Earth in the Balance and reverence for nature we should be thinking about--not wolf extermination--especially through aerial hunting which has no place in modern society.

If we are to continue a tradition of hunting beautiful animals like Alaska's wolves, let us do it in a fair and ethical way. As our elected representation, I ask you to honor this country and the animals we share it with by giving support to the PAW Act.

This is the worst thing possible for men to do to an animal. This needs to stop aerial hunting is horrorible. Because wolves are a beautiful creature that no man should murder for no reason.

I am disgusted with what I have heard abou the way they are doing the wolves and grizzley bears in Alaska. I believe that people like them should be hunted down just like they do these poor animals. It is cowardly, inhumane, and just down right unnecessary. They have said that sometimes it takes more then one shot to kill them and sometimes they get way and they just let them go out and bleed to death. In one story they are saying that they are killing to many deer and elk. But then in another story they say that but then they also add that it is bad business for Alaska. Stupid people that says that should do their research before they say that. They have now allowed hunters to kill up to 6 deers each year and one of those deers could feed a wolf pack of 8 or more for close to a week. Now do the math take 8+ hunters, 6 deers each a week. Then one take 1 wolf pack 1 of 8+, 1 deer a week. It seems to me that the hunters are the ones that are killing all of the deers. And really a wolf pack only go for the weak or sick. That helps with the balance of nature. And a hunter goes for the biggest and strongest. But to make a long story short I believe that Aerial Hunting should be banned and anyone caught doing it should be done the same way they do the animals they are hunting. The is no place in jail for such low-life people like them. STOP THE KILLING OF THESE BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS!!!!!! This land belonged to them WAY before it ever belong to any of us. So its really they are not coming on to our land and killing our food but its people that hunters that are coming on the wolves land and killing their food.

Wolves are an important part of our ecosystem, take them out, and chaos begins. Wolves are in my opinion, the most beautiful animal.
