Get Toyota to bring its hybrid minivan to America!

Target: Jim Press, President, Toyota North America
Sponsored by: Union of Concerned Scientists
Toyota has a fuel-efficient hybrid minivan named the Estima that boasts approximately 35 miles per gallon. Unfortunately, we can't get this clean, fuel-efficient, family vehicle here in America, it's only available in Japan! In America, unfortunately, more and more hybrid models are being introduced that focus on increased power rather than mileage.

Toyota aims to sell about 8,400 Estimas in Japan this year. Let's show Toyota how much demand there is in America for fuel-efficient family vehicles.

As the summer driving season and higher gas prices approach, Americans face another year where minivan options, even the Toyota Sienna, give families pain at the pump. Hybrid technology has the potential to play a major role in giving consumers fuel-efficient, low pollution options in every vehicle class - but only if the technology used to boost mileage, not muscle.

Toyota sells more vehicles in Japan than it does in America. So a petition surpassing their expected Estima sales numbers in Japan would send a strong signal that the U.S. market truly wants greater choices in fuel-efficient hybrid models.

Ask Toyota to deliver more fuel-efficient hybrid choices to America!

American consumers expect hybrid technology to deliver significant fuel economy gains without sacrificing performance. Too many current hybrid models, including your Lexus hybrids and Highlander Hybrid, deliver only marginal fuel economy gains while boosting power. This, in short, is the wrong road for hybrids.

Toyota need only look to its own vehicles to get back on the right path. The Estima Hybrid minivan has given Japanese families a fuel-efficient eight-passenger vehicle option since 2001. Such an option is long overdue in the United States.

As the summer driving season and higher gas prices approach, Americans face another year where minivan options, even the Toyota Sienna, give families pain at the pump. Like your outstanding Prius and Camry Hybrid before it, the sales success of your hybrid minivan in America will show that efficient hybrids can make automakers some real green by being genuinely green, and help hybrid technology live up to its promise.

Sincerely,

We can't believe it's taking so long for Toyota to bring it's hybrid minivan to the USA. Please do it soon!

I own a camry hybrid and love it. I could use a minivan for my growing family but I am refusing to buy one until it is a hybrid. If Honda releases the first hybrid minivan I won't hesitate to change brands. Don't worry about Ford, GM or Chrysler, I wouldn't drive one of their cars if it was a gift. The new highlander hybrid just doesn't solve the problems of easy access and storage that a minivan does.

I already own a camry so I vowed to never go with another car company. When I have a family of my own I would be really interested in a hybrid van.

We in the US are villified internationally for being addicted to gas guzzling SUVs and mini vans, yet we would happily and quickly purchase a hybrid mini-van. Since Toyota already has had one in Japan for a number of years, it is simply mind boggling that to my knowledge, Toyota has not attempted to bring the vehicle here. The typical response that "Americans" would not like the smaller vehicles with less horsepower marketed in Japan, shows that someone has NOT conducted a marketing study here in the USA. Or is it that the US Gov't is trying to protect the American car manufacturers who continue to have no clue why their sales are dropping?

We have baby #3 on the way and with the size of carseats needed to seat 3 small children, a minivan or a gas guzzling SUV is required. We want to do the economical and eco-friendly thing by getting a hybrid minivan, but there isn't one available! You can't blame the Americans for our carbon footprint if you don't provide a way for us to cut it significantly!

We are aiming in the next year or so to buy a minivan to accommodate our growing family including a child with disability and elderly parents. Your hybrid version would be our top choice. Please let us know when it will be available in the Canadian market or how to get on any waiting list for this right away.

Minivans are for people who love their kids. Let's save our planet for these kids!

Why should having the ability to carpool, come with such poor fuel economy? We're planning on buying a minivan next year and would buy a hybrid Toyota if it were available.

PLEASE! America needs a hybrid minivan! We (parents) are your most conscientious users of autos and fuel.

We are in the market for a new minivan for our family of 6. We are surprised and disappointed that there are no hybrid minivans available in the US, although Japan has had one for a number of years. Get with it, Toyota!

I have a family of six. We need the size of a minivan, but there are no hybrid minivans for sale in the USA. Toyota has the best hybrid drive system on the market today. Please bring the hybrid Estima in the USA.

With 3 kids in booster seats our only option is a van or SUV. We're driving a Sequoia now and I agonize over how much we're polluting the air and contributing to the war over the oil fields. I am ready to make the move to a van, but would like a hybird. Anytime now! We're waiting...

We bought a 2001 Prius in summer 2000, and have been extremely happy with it. Now that we have 2 kids, the greatest thing is to have a hybrid minivan from Toyota.

I love toyotas a I would like a Sienna, but the gas mileage is a killer. My wife owns a toyota camry and I have a Matrix. It is great on gas, but not enough room for what I need. I keep waiting for Toyota to come out with a hybrid mini-van in the US. I often see their vehicles when we travel in Europe, but I keep waiting for the US version. I just don't understand why the urgency is not there for manufacture ? I will be one of the first customers to buy one if it ever happens. Ray Clapper

I will echo the sentiments of some previous petitioners. I own a 1998 Dodge Caravan now, and it's starting to break down slowly. I hope we can keep it together just long enough for the Toyota hybrid minivan. As soon as it appears we will be purchasing.

I would buy a new minivan today if a hybrid version was available! We currently own a Dodge caravan with 150K miles and hope a hybrid is available before it dies. It would convince me to go with Toyota!
