A CALL FOR AN INTER-RELIGIOUS MEMORIAL IN AYASOFYA

We, the members of the civilised world, regardless of race, religion and nationality ask that an inter-religious memorial service be organized in honor of the victims of the tragic events of 9.11.01. It should be attended by all the religious and political leaders of the world and should be held in Ayasofya Museum Ýstanbul, Turkey (St.Sophia) which was used as a church for 916 years, a mosque for 481 years and as a museum embracing Christianity and Islam since 1934. The history of this church and its current incarnation acts as a symbol of the possible solidarity that can be forged between these religions.

We ask UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to initiate this invitation to all religious and political leaders of the world to meet in Istanbul, the crossroads of both civilisations and religions, where 2600 years of ongoing interaction between the West and the East, between Islam and Christianity, has informed the lives of society today. We believe this initiative will serve to: enhance understanding and solidarity between the people of all civilizations and religions; to cultivate the best qualities in human nature; and to struggle against international terrorism.

We ask this in order to:
  • show common international and inter-religious solidarity against terrorism, and
  • promote tolerance and understanding between Christianity, Islam and Judaism.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned
