Submit a Comment to Show Your Support for the EPA's New Methane Rules

Right now the oil and gas industry is leaking millions of metric tons of methane and other harmful chemicals into the air. These leaks are wasting enough energy to power millions of US homes every year while polluting the atmosphere with powerful heat-trapping gases that accelerate climate change.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed new methane rules to help rein in this pollution, fight climate change, and put us on the path to a healthy, sustainable future for the planet.

Dear EPA,

I'm writing to support the recently proposed methane pollution standards for the oil and gas industry. Every year, US oil and gas operations leak enough methane to power millions of homes. These leaks are wasteful and they’re driving climate change.

The EPA's new rules are a commonsense, cost-effective means to reduce these emissions and an important part of a broader goal within the President’s Climate Action Plan to reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas sector by 40-45 percent below 2012 levels by 2025.

While these rules are a welcome step towards addressing methane emissions from the US oil and gas sector, more action is needed. The rules should be strengthened to cover existing sources of methane, rather than just new and modified sources (as the proposed rules do).

I applaud these rules to new and modified sources and hope that the agency will take the next step by developing rules to reduce methane emissions from existing sources as well.

Sincerely,
