November 29, 2005

TO:  His Excellency President Ismael Omer Geule, President Of Djibouti Africa,   UNHCR, Head Office in Geneva,

 Madam Mariam Diallo UNHCR, Djibouti.

We, the undersigned, petition the Government of the Djibouti and UNHCR Head Office in Geneva, as well as UNHCR, in Djibouti, to respect the Geneva Convention, and to stop deporting Ethiopian Refugees (women and children) and bring a lasting solution for the Ethiopian political refugees that are about 3, 228 people, this includes 109, with official refugee acceptance I.D. Card or documents.  These, Refugee are suffering in both the hand of the Djibouti UNHCR's Officials and the Djibouti Police. Some of the Refugees have been in Djibouti for the last 14 years, hoping to get resettled in Europe, Canada and/or the United States.

Women, children and men are being maltreated by the Police, we feel no human being deserves this.  These people left their country, homes and livelihood seeking refuge in Djibouti in the hope of finding a better life and respect as a human being.  Sir/Madam no one chooses to be a refugee it is conditions that force them.  These people are not criminals but peace loving people forced to flee their country due to fear of persecution, they are being confronted with that once again.  This is not fair.

Your Excellency Mr. Guele , UNHCR Geneva as well as UNHCR in Djibouti we appeal to you through this petition to stop the deportation back to Ethiopia where these people fled from.  We ask the UNHCR office in Djibouti to uphold its mandate to protect the refugees and safeguard their rights and well being and help them too seek asylum and resettle them in a third country.

We will help them finding countries just like we did the Ethiopian refugees in Yemen and Israel, who are now living in the United States. We hope UNHCR, will help bring their suffering to an end soon.

Sincerely,

Yeharerwerk Gashaw
