Stop Puppy Mills in Pennsylvania

Target: Pennsylvania House of Representatives
Sponsored by: ASPCA

The poor treatment and abysmal conditions of dogs in Pennsylvania's puppy mills is already well documented, but a bill to amend the Pennsylvania Dog Law will soon be introduced in the state's House of Representatives.

Passage of this bill is vital if Pennsylvania is to improve conditions for dogs kept in commercial kennels and put an end to the state's reputation as the "puppy mill capital of the East." The bill would require:

  • Doubling the cage space.
  • Veterinarian visits at least once per year and with each pregnancy.
  • Access to outdoor exercise areas.
  • And many more provisions for the health and well-being of dogs.

Sign the petition and urge the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to reform the Dog Law. The dogs have suffered long enough!

deadline: 5-2-2009

Great news! The bill to reform puppy mills in Pennsylvania was introduced as PA HB 2525.

Thank you for your support!
We are writing to urge you to support and cosponsor Representative Casorio's bill to amend the Dog Law. There are over 2100 commercial breeding kennels in Pennsylvania. This crucial legislation would ensure much needed changes to the current Pennsylvania laws regulating commercial dog breeding kennels. Further, it would give the Department of Agriculture and the Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement the tools they need to effectively and consistently guarantee the humane treatment of dogs housed in Pennsylvania's commercial kennels.

Pennsylvania has developed a reputation as "the puppy mill capital of the East." The State's puppy mill industry garnered national attention recently, with some of its worst kennels being featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show. The high concentration of large-scale commercial dog breeding facilities, particularly in Lancaster County, has tarnished the State's reputation for decades. Additionally, it has caused countless hardships to both in-state and out-of-state dog owners who have purchased sick dogs bred in Pennsylvania's puppy mills. Representative Casorio's bill will help the State clean up its worst kennels and restore the State's image in the eyes of the entire nation.

The conditions in which these dogs are forced to live, is deplorable. In addition, new laws should be made that PA residents cannot shoot their dogs!

How can you see anything right in puppy mills? Innocent lives are being mutilated. I guarentee you would not dare actually go to a puppy mill and see the conditions our beloved friends are being forced to live in. It is morally wrong.

I have a number of prue bred dogs that I rescued from the local shelter, just before they were to be put down. These were NOT accidential breedings, but a deliberate grab for money that results in even more animals suggering. If these breeders wnat the public to have these wonderful specimens, then aren't they and their parents wrothy of good facilities, care and treatment? It that makes it too expensive, then they should look for another line of "work!" How can decent people sit by and watch suffering? No "reputable" breeder would object to more regs -- they all say they are doing these things anyway!! Any opposition probably comes from the very animal abusers that ought to be in jail!!

There are tons of unwanted animals in shelters that are perfectly healthy and loving. There's no need to breed any more.

I was disguisted to see the mis-treatment of the dogs in puppy mills. These domesticated animals are not live stock and must be treated with more humane care. I am a NJ resident but also own a home in Jefferson Twp. , PA. I pay taxes there and feel as a resident of PA, I am embarrassed that this is allowed. Please revise the standards set in this state for animal care, especially with puppy mills.

Why? What a crazy question! No one -- human or animal - should be treated in any way that isn't the kindest. We're all God's children and, someday, we will have to face our maker and stand accountable for our actions. My Wheaten Terrier, Bentley, sleeps on my bed! I can't imagine how sad these puppies are. Please be good to them and show them true love and affection.

This horrible cruelty is appalling. I WILL NEVER VISIT PA AS LONG AS THIS ABUSE & EXPLOITATION OF DOGS CONTINUES. It's time for PA enact & enforce laws to protect dogs from lives of misery, abuse & neglect - this is morally & ethically unacceptable.

Your state can do better than its reputation for being "the puppy mill capital of the East"! Animals - and people, too - are being hurt unnecessarily.

It's just not right to continue to let these kennels go on the way they do, the conditions for these poor animals are horrible. The worst offenders should be shut down and lose their liscense permanently and heavy fines should enforced. It makes me sick to see this happen and nothing seems to be done about it.
