Pet owners understand the unequivocal bond that can form between humans and their pets. But did you know that the human-animal bond can also provide healing? Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) and Animal Assisted Activities (AAA) can change the lives of those in need.
We need to get AAT and AAA programs into hospitals where they have an impact.
The benefits of human-animal interaction can be monumental. AAT and AAA programs have motivated rehabilitation patients to walk again, taught special-needs children life skills, and facilitated counseling sessions in mental health centers.
Animals used in therapy have the ability to decrease anxiety, loneliness and depression, increase mental stimulation, and foster a sense of safety and protection.
Let's use the resources we already have. We can take advantage of this mutually beneficial relationship by giving animals the attention they deserve, while offering people the gift of unconditional love.
Tell the American Hospital Association to team up with animal shelters across the nation to develop and implement AAT and AAA programs in hospitals.
We took action on “Animals and People Helping One Another”!

Dear American Hospital Association,
This would be such a great treatment and all I can say is that animals have less germs than people do, so I can not see any reason why. I would rather have my furbaby lick me than have a human doing that...really! So please consider the implementation of AAT and AAA in association with current health care treatment options. AAT and AAA treatments have proven to be successful in many cases across the country.
I can vouch for a fact that having a furbaby in your life decreases anxiety, loneliness and depression. They give so much love. Isn't it time we start giving back what God created?
Please team up with local animal shelters, and implement the use of AAT and AAA in hospitals across the nation. These programs benefit both lonely patients and loving animals.
Sincerely
Sophia

I have seen first hand what an animal can do for people in a hospital or nursing home. My Rottweiler, Miss Priss, was a certified Therapy Dog/Service Dog. She went everywhere with me.
My Dad had Alzhiemers, and was in a nursing home last year. Priss and I flew to Florida to help get him moved into a VA contracted nursing home. The smiles on the other residents faces when they saw Priss was amazing! Priss actually helped my Dad remember who I was on my last visit there before his death on September 14, 2008. Sadly, I lost my Priss just 2 days before my Dad died.
My dog, my friend, my constant companion gave me the greatest gift I could have ever received - she helped my Dad to remember who I was. I will treasure that memory for the rest of my life. Oh, and the time that this happened - the week of Father's Day!
My dearest friend told me that Priss had to go before my Dad, so that she could be there to welcome him Home!
Help others that are in a hospital or nursing home get some enjoyment in a place that will give them and their families some 'Unconditional Love from the 4 legged variety'!

Animals have always offered us more than we could ever give them.
The love an animal has for us, the love and bond we have with them, is one of the closest bonds we will have in our lives.
Animals have always been a source of love, hope, calmness, happiness, and peace.
Their are healing powers in these special animals.
My dog has given me protection and a sense that she would do anything to see to it I am alright.
My dog brings me happiness, I am never alone, I am less anxious and depressed.
I know first hand the healing my Peanut has offered me, wont you allow these wonderful animals a chance to be a friend to someone who really needs one?

It is a proven fact that animals help with many, many treatments. Lets use what we have to help the ill and also help the animals.

Just thinking that her cats with with her in her hospital room gave my mother comfort as she died. How much better would a real feline or canine visitor have been?

If ever you question the effectiveness of AAT or AAA, look up "Faith" the bipedal Dog. She walks solely on her back feet, upright like a human, because she has NO front legs. Tell me that this would not inspire a physically challanged child to overcome his obstacles. When your heart longs for nothing more than love, get a dog, their love is unconditional.
