Georgia Poised to O.K. Bible Study in Public Schools

Target: Governor Perdue
Sponsored by: Defcon - Campaign to Defend the Constitution
The Georgia State Senate passed two pieces of legislation that pose a serious threat to the separation of church and state. One would create state-funded Bible classes in Georgia public schools. The second would allow the Ten Commandments to be displayed by county governments.

Both bills are on Governor Sonny Perdue's desk, and he is contemplating whether to sign them. That's why we need you to take action today.

The religious right will stop at nothing to push their theology in the public square or our public schools. And now, they want to use public dollars to do it!

Take action now and demand that Governor Perdue defend the Constitution and Georgia's citizens from these attacks on the doctrine of separation of church and state.

Despite sending over 12,000 letters, on April 20, 2006 Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue signed the law requiring school districts adopt state funded bible classes. The governor also signed a law authorizing displaying the Ten Commandments on government buildings.

I am deeply troubled by the Georgia legislature's decision to challenge our nation's Constitution and approve two bills that clearly defy the separation of church and state. The bills in question would create Bible study classes in Georgia's public schools and allow county governments to display the Ten Commandments. By singling out the Bible and the Ten Commandments as symbols to be promoted in the public sphere -- one in classrooms and the other in government buildings -- the government of Georgia is showing preferential treatment to a specific religion and violating the rights of its citizens.

I urge you to veto these bills and protect the sanctity of our nation's founding document as well as the freedom of all Georgians.

Sincerely,

School is no place for religion to be pushed. If the religious parents want their religion to be taught so badly, they should pay to have their children go to their schools instead of forcing public schools to accommodate them. As a Muslim, I know it's not my right nor my place to demand that the Quran or prayer be mandatory, so I expect the same respect for my own children when they attend the same schools.

It is wrong to force kids in school to attend bible study,if you do bring it in please make sure its not mandatory for kids to attend,if it is then people will remove there kids and take them to other schools, religion should never be compulsory as its a one sided view, unless you allow all religions equal time.

I feel that religous beliefs are the responsiblity of the parent(s) and should be taught at home. There are plenty of religous programs that will teach children outside of the home if the parent desires. However, our school funding should be to the children's education- both intellectual and physical. I would prefer to put the money to work on improving food and P.E. classes so that the obesity "epidemic" will be short lived.

Kids who want to learn about the bible can do it in Sunday school and on their own time. I personally wouldn't want my child to be exposed to that. Separation of church from state means just that. All the people who have a problem with religious governments in the Middle East should be especially sensitive to this here so we don't go down the same road. Bible classes in public schools is just one step towards that. Keep your religion to yourself and those who choose to share it with you.

Church, home, & religious schools are the places that our country allows all forms of religion to be discussed & taught. The public school system is NOT the place to teach any one or all (over 500 religions). Religious study should/can be offered as electives on a college level, or as a course of study, Theology, also in a collegiate setting. If one branch of religion(Judeo-Christian-Bible) is allowed as a regular course in public schools, then ALL RELIGIONS should also be allowed & taught. This is America. Taxpayers pay for the schools, if the taxpayers do not agree, as they will not, then why is this even being proposed? Are Islamic,Jewish,Buddhist,Hindu, etc. studies going to be equally offered? This is not even an ethical proposal based on our very Constitution/Bill of Rights. Obviously someone needs to do some studying of our own American heritage on the school boards there in Georgia. If parents want their children to learn differently, they can home school.

I understand peoples want to educate their youth on the belief system in which they themselves follow, and I support freedom of religon. I do on the other hand do not believe my tax dollars should be spent on teaching, "christian" religious studies in public schools. There are more important subjects which should have a higher presidence within the schools systems. Subjects like science, history, english as well as other basic classes are being pushed aside in todays schools. So georgia's answer is to pull both funds and time away from the basics to allocate "bible Study"? Is that not what sunday school, after school groups and parents are for, or have people gotten so busy they can't set aside time to educate their children on their beliefs so the turn to the school systems who are allready overtasked to do this for them. Sounds to me like people themselves need to get back to basics.

Our kids cant even compete with other countries in math and science. I dont think we need to waste anymore time at school on things that should be taught in the home. Every person has different beliefs. Save those classes for college or private christian schools.

We do not need the christian dogma. We certainaly do not need to pay taxes to fund this either. I am not raising my children with my beliefs just so I can be forced to teach them someone else's. I do not belief in christ and I do not want my children forced to study about him. The christians in this country need to wake up and realize that our forefathers founded this country on that sole belief. They ran from Britain where they were forced to believe christianity and pay the church. Now, we are trying to do the same. This is simply sick.

Home and the church have the responsibility for religion. No prosolyzing in our schools. We do have a Bill of Rights. Comply with it always not sometimes.

Thats the problem with america we say were a democracy but we dont listen to the majority so how can this be? Bible says the Nation that reverence the Lord is blessed. We need to revamp our whole system take our Country back. Like the constitution says We the people. The Morals of our country are in Jeopardy because we let Evil Immoral people have influence on a Country that would not tollerate behaviors going on today. We are falling out of the Grace of God who delivered us from our enemies. God help Isreal because I dont believe were going to defend Gods people anymore. I pray that Our Heavenly Father deliver us soon and wipe out the abominators, unbelievers,Idol worshippers those who are Taking Our Grace from God away from us the Majority. Molested become Molesters.. why would we want Immoral people around our children. And Abortion no thank you the constitution is supposed to defend the them. I pray Our Holy Father Elohim Guide the Moral Majority to stand up and not put up with these people who are against our rights to a clean life. Next thing you know people will be fighting for rights to have sex with children and animals.. Where do we take our stand?

it is called separation of church and state for a reason. But seeing as how the US government has forgotten this as well as most of our constitutional rights and human rights, do as you wish, but know that this will rest on your head. If you really truly want to avoid civil unrest, think about what you are doing

If it is voluntary, I say go for it. Studying the Christian Bible is just as valid as studying geography. If it's a choice, no problem. If it is mandatory, I say, you need to reread the Constitution. Now, about the Ten Commandments being displayed . . . I'll keep my beliefs out of your face if you keep yours out of mine!!

I teach my grandchildren Bible classes. I believe all children need a religious base. But home and church are where that base belongs, not in the schools. Our schools are having enough trouble without adding this way too controversial problem, anyway. Thanks for the good work!

Separation of Church and State is an important part of how our country works as a democracy. Practice religion separately from government. If you want to practice religion in school, then go to a parochial school. Public schools must remain separate from religion - all religions.
