Tell Congress: HUNGER HURTS Hard-Working Families!

In today's troubled economic climate, it isn't surprising that many Americans are struggling with hunger. What may be a surprise is exactly who is suffering. Many believe hunger is a problem only for the homeless. Unfortunately, statistics prove that 40 percent of those seeking food assistance are employed. More and more it is America's working poor who are at risk of hunger.

Please let your representative know that you want a comprehensive strategy to fight hunger written into law today. Together, we can work to eliminate hunger in America.

Dear Representative,

I'm writing today on behalf of every family that has gone hungry in these troubled economic times. It is no secret that our economy is struggling; many like me have been forced to cut back on luxuries and tighten our belts a little as we wait for the financial climate to turn around. But there are many who are far worse off than me, and I'd like to urge you to be a voice for them in Congress.

Many people, even those who care deeply about these issues, don't realize that hunger is not just a problem for the homeless in America. Indeed, statistics will show you that nearly half - 40 percent - of all those asking for food assistance are actually employed. To have a job but still need extra help to provide for your family is something that is difficult to fathom, but that is the situation for the working poor, especially those providing for children or other family members. We need to enact sweeping policy changes to ensure that America's working poor won't have to decide between feeding their families and keeping the electricity on, or paying the rent.

Let me tell you, I am a volunteer here at Lancaster United Methodist Church. We operate a Soup Kitchen / Sandwich Shoppe. This ministry started 20 years ago, feeding 6 people that very first day. Now as of this past Thursday we feed 276 people. That comes to 312 the first year to January 09 to present 7253 persons. You must do something to help this problem. Our government and our society it is the responsibility of ours to help those who can't help themselves. It's up to you.

Honestly, take $10 billion from the $500-billion+ military budget ($1 trillion if you include non-DoD defense spending) and you could easily help supplement the food budgets of 10 million of your own citizens -- without ever sacrificing the safety of the troops.

Access to health care and the end of hunger in America is the right of every citizen who lives in a Democracy. Many hard working people are going hungry today. This isn't right. When choices include living in a "cardboard box" or a car because a family has to eat, something is very wrong. If all of us work together, America can once again become the greatest nation on Earth.
