Tell NC Lawmakers: Keep Our State Safe From Fracking!

The Mining and Energy Commission (MEC) is accepting public comments on the proposed fracking rules that will establish a framework for fracking in North Carolina.

We know that fracking is wrong for North Carolina and we won’t stop fighting it. However, our state legislature has voted to let drilling begin as soon as next summer. No rules can make fracking a good choice for our state, but the MEC’s proposed rules create major, unnecessary risks to human health and the environment, and your comments can help fix that. Here are some of the most critical changes needed:

  • Capture and control toxic air emissions from all gas wells drilled in North Carolina.
  • Ban storage of fracking fluids in open pits.
  • Ban surface discharge of ‘treated’ fracking wastewater.
  • State clearly that NC law and the rules don’t allow forced pooling.

  • Take action today to support strong protections from fracking operations in NC!
To whom it may concern:

I urge the Commission to make these improvements to the proposed fracking rules that will help to protect the health of North Carolinians, our communities, and our environment:

- Require that ALL gas wells drilled in North Carolina have green completions under rules 5H .1308 and 5H .1614.
- Ban storage of fracking fluids in open pits in 5H .2002, and make similar changes throughout the rest of the .2000 rules.
- Revise 5H .2002 and 5H .2003(i) so that it bans surface discharge of ‘treated’ fracking wastewater.
- State clearly that forced pooling cannot be conducted under current North Carolina law or under these proposed rules.

Please make these changes and protect our environment and communities.

Thank you.
