Tell the EPA to Strengthen Tailpipe Pollution Standards

Passenger vehicles account for about 47 percent of all the oil we burn in the United States. But thanks to the fuel economy standards set by the Obama administration, the efficiency of vehicles across all classes is improving, spurring innovation, cutting oil use, reducing emissions, and saving drivers money at the pump. The current goal of raising the average fuel economy of passenger vehicles to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025 will significantly reduce oil use and cut climate pollution by as much as 6 billion metric tons – that's equivalent to the annual carbon pollution from 150 coal-fired power plants.

Yet, with the rules now under midterm review, polluters are putting their profits over our health by trying to roll back these critical standards. If industry groups had their way, cars would be running less efficiently and increasing pollution. We can't let that happen and we won't turn back. It’s time to build on these lifesaving pollution standards and continue to improve the efficiency of every vehicle on the market.

Take action now to urge the EPA to strengthen the vehicle fuel economy standards that will reduce climate pollution and protect the health of our communities!
Thanks to the Obama administration’s fuel economy standards, the cars and trucks sold today have the technology to decrease oil use, harmful air pollutants, and dangerous greenhouse gas emissions that leave our families sick and our climate in peril.

The EPA's recent draft technical assessment review (TAR) of the current fuel economy standards shows that our efficiency goals are not only achievable, but they’re already working now. Our cars and trucks are cleaner and more efficient than ever before, which is good news for our health and climate. The midterm review is an opportunity to make sure that the standards achieve the maximum carbon pollution reductions and gas mileage gains. Considering how far ahead of today's targets automakers are, and the rapid rate of technology innovation, it's clear that manufacturers can exceed the current 2025 standards of 54.5 miles per gallon.

It is imperative that when the EPA is renewing these lifesaving standards, you ensure that the TAR reflects the current costs and availability of all technologies and efficiencies available. The fuel economy standards should be made a strong as possible to support cleaner air and healthier families.
