Oppose South Africa's Plan to Kill Elephants

Target: Mr Marthinus van Schalkwyk, Minister, South Africa Ministry of Environmental Affairs & Tourism
Sponsored by: Care2.com
South Africa has announced it will reverse its 1995 ban on killing elephants and resume culling of elephants in May. Elephant family groups could be rounded up by helicopters and shot from the air by marksmen.

Culling has been reinstated due to fears of elephant overpopulation in protected areas and the habitat destruction that too many elephants can cause. But this plan disregards the fact that elephants are extremely intelligent, social creatures with strong family bonds. It is well known that elephants mourn their dead, and killing large numbers of these sensitive creatures is cruel and unethical.

Please urge the South African government to continue exploring non-lethal options for dealing with growing elephant populations.

I am deeply saddened at the news that the South African government plans to reinstate elephant culls. Elephants are highly intelligent and social animals with strong family bonds, and killing of these magnificent animals will be devastating for the surviving individuals in these herds.

I urge your government to continue exploring all non-lethal means of population control and elephant management, including birth control habitat expansion through wildlife corridors and trans-boundary parks.

Thanks you for considering my comments.

Sincerely,

I've watched several documentaries on elephant culling to reduce population size, and I am outraged that we are treating animals like this. Moreover, I have seen that elephants are also being killed for their ivory tusks. Such behaviour is truly an act of animal cruelty and we must put a stop to this at once.

Elephants are wonderful, necessary animals. They are endangered species. They are emotional animals and smart. They are also peaceful, good animals. Please don't kill them.

Elephants are one of the few kindred spirits we have on this planet in terms of intelligence and self-awareness. We are such a brilliant species, really can't we come up with a better way to deal with our problems than with more death and destruction??

There are better ways! Turn these gentle giants into an asset for your country. Gather and sell their waste for excellant fertilizer. We do that here in our Portland, OR Zoo. Send it to places on your continent that need help with poor soil conditions. Make the elephants a tourist attraction, they can make you money to help your people and endear you to other countries. Others will hate you if you kill them. Build love and peace with these giants as God intended. There are viable options, please examine them first.

I oppose the culling of these magnificent creatures on the basis that it is a barbaric practice. The human element should rearrange its population and habitat in order to make more room for these ancient natives of Africa.

Please show your humanity by showing life the respect it deserves. Don't slaughter innocents - it is our duty to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Allowing this will bring dignity and respect to you a thousand-fold. Thank you for your consideration. Lara

Elephants are the Righteous Guardians of this Planet, established by Mother Nature herself. They are humble, strong, magnificent, beautiful, and they never forget. Let them remember our kindness and love towards them instead of our violence and cruelty against them.
