Urge Congress to support the Equality Act!

While marriage equality is now a reality across the nation, so is the sad truth that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans in most states lack clear, fully inclusive non-discrimination laws that protect them.

Even after a marriage victory at the Supreme Court, in most states in this country, a couple who gets married at 10 a.m. remains at risk of being fired from their jobs by noon and evicted from their home by 2 p.m. simply for posting their wedding photos on Facebook.

No one should be fired, evicted from their home, or denied services because of who they are or whom they love. All LGBT Americans deserve a fair chance to earn a living and provide for their families and this bill will help ensure that all employees are hired, fired or promoted based on their performances.

Take action today in support of the Equality Act – a bill that would write into federal law full and enduring non-discrimination protections for all LGBT Americans. The Equality Act provides basic protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, access to public spaces, housing, education, jury service, credit and federal funding.

Urge your members of Congress to support this critical piece of legislation.
Dear [Member of Congress],

Although the United States is now home to marriage equality in all 50 states, millions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans face the persistent threat of being discriminated against and fired, denied equal access to housing -- and denied access to public spaces, education and proper credit reporting -- because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest LGBT advocacy organization, has endorsed comprehensive, federal LGBT non-discrimination legislation, the Equality Act. I urge you to support this critical piece of legislation.

If this bill were to pass, it would provide full, federal equality for millions of Americans. Sadly, although a same-sex couple can get married anywhere in the country, they remain at risk of being fired, losing their housing or being denied a loan -- and a transgender person can face problems obtaining a credit report after a name change. I do not believe this treatment is fair, reasonable or remotely American.
