Boycott tourist travel to Alaska until hunting hunting restrictions are restored on national wildlife refuges

  • by: Helen C
  • recipient: Governor Bill Walker, Rep. Don Young, who sponsored the bill.
This bill was introduced to repeal an Obama-era hunting regulations on national wildlife regulations in Alaska. The restrictions were introduced to protect predator species such as wolves and bears from hunters. The bill's intent was about states rights, with interest in sustaining populations for hunting, versus federal regulations, with a goal of preserving biodiversity. The bill sanctions the killing of hibernating bears and wolf pups in their dens, aerial hunting of wolves and bears, and the trapping of these predators with steel-jawed leghild traps and snares.
This bill was supported by the NRA, the Safari Club, and several hunting outfitters, and goes against scientific research concerning the protection of predators. It is purely about states rights, although the areas in question are federal lands, belonging to ALL Americans, not just Alaska.
Tourist contribute more than $2.42 BILLION annually, and generates 37,700 jobs. Boycotting tourism to Alaska would send a message that this bill is unacceptable and harmful to the economy if Alaska, and that most Americans do not support the cruel and unscientific destruction of wildlife.
