Help Stop Bush's Anti-Choice Supreme Court Nominee – John Roberts

Target: U.S. Senators
Sponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America
Just as we feared, President Bush has nominated a right-wing judicial activist with an anti-choice track record to the Supreme Court: John Roberts.

If Roberts is confirmed to a lifetime appointment, there is little doubt that he will work to overturn Roe v. Wade. As Deputy Solicitor General under the first President Bush, he argued to the Supreme Court that “Roe was wrongly decided and should be overruled....” We must not allow someone who’s spent his career advocating ending the right to choose to be appointed to the most important court in our country.

It's time for pro-choice Americans - we are in the majority after all - to fight back. Send an email to your U.S. senators right now to oppose Roberts.

Update: On Thursday, September 29th, the Senate voted to approve John Roberts as the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, replacing the late William Renquist. The vote was 77-22, with Republicans unanimously supporting the nomination and half of the chamber’s Democrats voting against it.

Roberts will become the 17th Chief Justice of the United States, and begins his new role when the Court’s fall term begins, on Monday, October 3rd.

This petition is now closed.

Dear Senator,

As your constituent, I am urging you to oppose John Roberts, President Bush's nominee to the Supreme Court.

If Roberts is confirmed to a lifetime appointment, there is little doubt that he will work to overturn Roe v. Wade. As Deputy Solicitor General under the first President Bush, he argued to the Supreme Court that "Roe was wrongly decided and should be overruled...."

Appointment to the Supreme Court allows unparalleled power and opportunity to shape national law and policy for generations. An anti-choice judge, if elevated to the Supreme Court, could tip the balance in many cases dealing with reproductive rights and other personal freedoms. Roberts, who has demonstrated hostility to the right to choose, will very likely be such a judge. The American public deserves a nominee that can be counted on to uphold our constitutional rights.

Sincerely,
[your name]

This man is no more than an extension of the criminals, liars, and ideologues that are destroying our country and our reputation around the world. Don’t let these criminals have a lifetime seat on our supreme court; we will loose 50 years of progress by the confirmation of this wolf in sheep’s clothing.

It's my opinion, he who has nothing to hide, hides nothing! It appears that Mr. Roberts is hiding behind legal rhetoric and loopholes to say nothing about who he really is. If this is the process, then the whole thing is a scam and a huge waste of time and American dollars to hold hearings. If Mr. Roberts' "inability" to answer is not governed by process limitations and he could speak but chooses not to, then words, or, rather lack of words, speak volumes. Either way, the public which he is to serve (not the other way around) knows nothing of substance about this man and therefore, are unable to support him as Chief Justice and neither should congress.

I oppose the Roberts nomination because he is out of step with the majority of Americans, regardless of what the loud-mouthed ultra-conservative Christian minority believe. He knows this himself and that is why he won't be open about his opinions and philosophy.

I would appose any indiviual that couldn't be open with the American people whom he/she wishes to govern or represent. These positions whether elected or appointed(presidential, congressional, or judicial) still are in those positions representing the rights and views of the American voter/taxpayer.I believe the life time appointed JUDICIAL position that will ultimately affect all Americans deserves a second or third appointee consideration. How does the sign read "BUYER BEWARE"!PLEASE put this on Mr Bush's desk.

Would you let a man who didn't answer your questions to watch over or babysit your children? Absolutely NOT! Roberts will undoubtedly set and reverse precedents that will limit the rights of the upcoming generation.

I do not think we should confirm a man who refused to tell us what his basic values and beliefs are. His past actions indicate a very conservative, anti voting rights, anti environmental outlook yet he refused to answer questions on his judicial philosophy. I fear this man will undo all the progress made over the past 70 years that have helped the "little person" and the land in America. The radical right is taking over this country and we will all suffer greatly. Please do not confirm Roberts.
