Legalize Medicinal Marijuana, Save Lives

Target: Congress; Supreme Court of the United States
Sponsor: Connie Surace
  • Signatures: 855
  • Goal: 10,000
  • Deadline: Ongoing...
In 1974, researchers at the Medical College of Virginia, who had been funded by the National Institute of Health, were hired to look for evidence that marijuana damages the immune system.  They found, instead, that THC slowed the growth of three kinds of cancer in mice:  lung cancer, breast cancer, and leukemia.  In 1999, scientists in Spain repeated the experiment, with equal results.

Medicine, plastic, clothing, paper, and many more products can be made from hemp, and it used to be such a booming crop in the US that refusing to grow hemp during the 17th and 18th centuries was actually against the law in Virginia from 1763 to 1769...(click "Full Petition" to continue)

870 9:35 am PST, Nov 21 Bryant Moreno We dont need the government tryin to make Hemp illigal just because they cant tax it!
869 10:11 am PST, Nov 19 Anonymous Yay weed!
868 6:12 pm PST, Nov 18 Jason Dickman There is nothing to base Marijuana's current status as a Schedule I controlled substance. Caffeine, nicotine and alcohol should be in the same category.
867 5:33 pm PST, Nov 18 raynond renfro it should be legal for people in states where it is not allowed for people with ailments i myself have a few physical problems like scoliosis and adhd i dont see why it isnt legal ciggarettes and alcohol kill more people then weed ever will
866 10:39 am PST, Nov 18 Zachary Swaser "A wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another; shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement." Well put, Thomas Jefferson. I'm not sure if Thomas Jefferson would be an advocate of the legalization of marijuana in our society today (even though it is a little known fact that he himself was a large marijuana farmer), but nonetheless, his quotation seems to fit my thinking nearly verbatim. One should be free to do whatever one wants, so long as it not disrupt the life of another. One is free to begin with, and should not need any reasoning or rationalizing to be free. Therefore the question is not, "Why should marijuana be legalized?", but instead, "Why shouldn't marijuana be legalized?" http://www.psychonoble.com/archives/articles/20.html
865 10:48 pm PST, Nov 17 Matthew Hosey It's amazing that they once prescribed cocaine--a synthetically derived substance--for many different things, but they make such a big deal about marijuana--a natural herb. If you compare drugs to marijuana, there simply is no comparison. Crack/cocaine makes you all jiffy and fills you full of "energy," is highly addictive, doesn't last that long, and can lead to overdose. That being said, one is more likely to commit a crime to fulfill their needs and one would have the energy to do so. Now on to alcohol. Yes it is true that alcohol is also addictive, but it's nowhere near as expensive as other substances, and as long as it's consumed responsibly isn't a bad substance. It does, however, have a terrible track record with DUI related fatalities and such, but that's not actually the alcohol, that's just people neglecting responsibility. It is true, however, that alcohol doesn't typically lead to crime--unless it's a domestic violence and it doesn't cause it, it just amplifies it. Moving forward, we reach heroine. Heroine is perhaps one of the most addictive of any substance, and statistically leads to crime, and diseases. Not only that, but the simple fact that you could die from the withdrawal symptoms--if that's not crazy what is? It's true that some drugs such as methamphetamine's may be more addictive, but they don't necessarily lead to diseases. Methamphetamine's are not only made up of a wide array of chemicals to include--but are not limited to--alkaline, ether alcohol, anhydrous ammonia, and more. Not only are these hazardous to one's helath, but it too can cause overdose, and such. Given the aforementioned it's clear that an herb such as marijuana should not only be legal for medicinal use, it should just be totally legal--or at least decriminalized. Not only does it have a wide variety of medical uses, it's not prone to many of the effects of other drugs. It's argued that it's not addictive, and when do you see a "pot head" committing a crime? I mean hell, if you were to smoke pot and even think of doing a crime, you'd likely be deterred by the fact that you have the munchies and are just wanting to chill. Despite the fact that the context of this writing is unstudied and may seem biased, it does have some level of truth to it regardless. I just hope it was informational, interesting, and piques interest of readers. Also, help the cause, please sign the petition and let your voice be heard.
864 9:17 pm PST, Nov 17 patrick o'donnell marijuana has never been proven to cause more damage to the human body then tobacco or alcohol. it causes a different state of mind like alcohol but isnt necessarily the same effect. all in all if you regulate the use of marijuana it can be beneficial to our health standards and our community living
863 6:56 pm PST, Nov 17 Clayton Carrico its one of the safe

861 8:11 am PST, Nov 15 Anonymous If it was legal the government could make a profit off of it! Think about it

858 10:27 pm PST, Nov 10 Anonymous It's a natural herb...It was made for healing...yes the government has given it a bad reputation...let's focus on our freedoms and the facts...
857 12:54 pm PST, Nov 10 Anonymous Why is this still illegal?
856 1:52 pm PST, Nov 7 Denise Hulsey It is the right thing to do ...leaglize marijuana!
855 2:17 am PST, Nov 5 Rob G I strongly believe in the reclassification of Cannibis from Schedule I to Schedule V. Please see my thoughts on legalization here: http://publicwreckord.blogspot.com/2008/11/dea-7360-common-sense-liberty-and-csa.html
854 7:03 pm PST, Nov 4 Anonymous i think it should be legal cause for example my mom has had 7 sergeries on her back and she takes pain killers all day its safer for her just to smoke weed and more natural that tons of pills. people will smoke it regardless we are wasting money for cops busting people for pot when cops smoke it them self its all about the profit the government can get on taxing it it is more safe than alcohol and tabacco combined
853 6:18 pm PST, Nov 4 Jonathan Ball its time the government wakes up! they need to play catch up with our generation.
852 1:50 pm PST, Nov 4 Krys Bulenda What they are doing to this poor woman is what's illegal. Marijuana has been on this plant long before humans, it is natural, and if it works for her, what is the problem? Oh yeah, everyone knows what's good for us.
851 3:30 pm PDT, Oct 30 Carol James Legalize It ! For the patient and their families sake. You can give me MORPHINE to carry around with me NATIONWIDE with it's effects, withdraws & nausea, and the LOWERTABS bouncing me off the walls (& makes me nausea) ...but you forbid I choose to partake of Marijuana with it's milder effects but yet efficient enough to maintain (not cure) the illness & it's symptoms, giving us a healthier life and lifestyle. God gave to us the herb for our medicine...not liquor (which man made). Lawfully, I can risk liver disease and get 'legally' drunk, to the point of black-outs, violence, not eating, hallucinations, etc .. just to stop the pain, discomfort, and the reoccurring memory. Oh, please don't forget my PROZAC which really makes me not give a damn about anything ..even before the tequila and morphine take effect. If given a true choice ... Had society (& The Law) rather I smoke a simple joint to self-medicate or rather me walk around dysfunctional doing the THROZINE shuffle from all the other prescribed-pain, anti-depression pills, & the liquor high ? Your protest of 'the kids' and the effect of pot being more accessible if it's legalized.. do you worry of the same easier possibility the kid's may/can get my pain pills, tequila or anti-depression while in my other legal prescription-medicine stupor-state' ;or even if I've just taken my prescribe PHENERGAN (for nausea) which knocks me out cold! Legalize the simple pot for those who still want to function healthier, peacefully and contently in this world that we want to live in. The worst that will happen is we will all stay home( in the garden) dealing with our medical problems and off the streets. You don't have to partake of the marijuana (..or go the liquor store..) just cause it's legal. But if you wanted to, aren't you responsible enough to make that choice to do so, or not? Thank You for allowing me to become a legal responsible citizen as well , and not nauseated. LEGALIZE MARIJUANA ! It's the right thing to do. AMEN

849 6:27 pm PDT, Oct 25 Brandon Shurter Hemp can save our planet and can be used for fuel, paper, and so many more things! The first bible and constitution was written on hemp paper! Marijuana is far less dangerous than alcohol or cigarettes. Think of the money the government could save from the "war on drugs" and how much they could make off regulating it. We could pay the national debt! Plus, if marijuana is legal, many people will choose this to be the drug of their choice and stop doing harder drugs. Legalize it! Spread the word!

841 11:50 am PDT, Oct 15 Jorge Rentas For a long time the U.S. government has led us to believe that marijuana is one of the most dangerous drugs in the world when in fact it is a drug that can be used to save lives. It's time to put a an end to the government's oppression of marijuana and just legalize it already.
840 8:14 pm PDT, Oct 14 Anonymous i believe that Marijuana shouldnt be illegal because it has many medical uses and should be used as such.

837 6:50 pm PDT, Oct 13 Joseph Repole legalize it. Weed is definitely not as bad as it is made out to be, I am a top athlete and captain of the 2008 provincial championship team in British Columbia and I firmly believe that it should be completely legal. If consumed correctly there are very little if any physical side effects.
836 8:47 am PDT, Oct 13 Brian Dalby In 2006 I went in for back surgery. They put 2 titanium rods and 6 screws in my lower back. Since I first injured my back in 2001, I am now addicted to a dangerous, harmful pain pill called Percocet! I smoke marijuana to get myself of the drug and control my pain. Granted, it doesn't take it all away but most of it. I have my good days and bad ones but when I smoke, it makes for a really good day of cleaning and work unlike the Percocet that just keeps me in a stuper to where I get nothing done at all. In January this year, my doctor suckered me into a pain contract. Is this even legal!? If I test positive one more time for marijuana, he will dismiss me as a patient. He knew from day one that I smoke! Why did it take almost 4yrs for him to have me sign a pain contract? Legalize medical marijuana and end most of the suffering cause by pain, illness, etc........Marijuana isn't addicting as people intend it to be! Yes, it isn't for everyone, just those of us who do need it as a safe pain medication! Thank you
835 8:13 am PDT, Oct 13 jeff peterson i was a smoker for years and an alcoholic. Alcohol is far more worse than pot. I would drink and have trouble driving. Never with Pot. I suffer from depression and anxioty and pot always helped me before. Legalize it now!!

815 2:40 pm PDT, Sep 28 Vibraceous ND Should God be arrested for running a grow lab? Criminalizing that which grows in nature is to assume jurisdiction of the law over God. As a naturopathic doctor, a minister, and a former certified chemical dependency professional...I find these to be preposterous laws and a denial of some of the most basic rights, such as the right to make our own choices regarding our health and our right to believe as we will. To my way of thinking marijuana is a God-given plant. as is every plant that grows from the ground. It is there for a purpose for good. Refer to the book of Genesis, Chapter 1, please. Not that the Bible means anything in government, but I do think these laws trample upon some very important religious freedoms and rights. I mean basically this law says that the whole first chapter of the Bible is wrong, when it says right there that God made it and saw it as good. In fact, it is meant as our food...and I might say, it nutritionally proves out to be an extremely valuable herb. Oh ye great lawmakers in this God-fearing land of the free and the brave, to what purpose does such a law serve? Did Satan actually plunk the seed into the ground? This is absolutely absurd.

Legalize Medicinal Marijuana, Save Lives

California is one of eleven states in the US that allow the use of medical marijuana.  The laws recognizing marijuana's medicinal value were enacted first in New Mexico, Florida, Louisiana, and Illinois, and then spread through more states in the past 20 years since the passage of Proposition 215 in Washington, DC.

Yet Angel Raich, a 41-year old mother of two from Oakland, California, turned down her appeal yesterday to permit her use of medicinal marijuana.  The case was originally heard in the Supreme Court in 2005.  Angel's doctor has prescribed the herb for her since 1997, and says that marijuana is the only viable means to prevent her from dying of her disease.

She suffers from a brain tumor known as scoliosis, which causes chronic nausea and makes it difficult for her to eat.  The marijuana stimulates the patients' appetites and relieves the pain more effectively than prescription drugs.  Ms. Raich and three other plaintiffs sued the government for federal laws regarding medicinal marijuana enacted in 2002, that trump the eleven state's laws.  Though Raich's "prescription" was already seized, the federal court also ruled that she is not immune from federal prosecution.

Angel Reich wept when she heard the court decision, and the New York times reported that she said, "It's not every day in this country that someone's right to life is taken from them.  Today you are looking at someone who really is walking dead."

TELL THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT THIS IS NOT OKAY.
