If you liked TTIP, you'll love CETA - stop toxic trade deals

Thanks to activists like you, TTIP (the EU-US trade deal) is facing defeat. But there’s another equally toxic deal that's about to become law unless we act now!

TTIP's demise shows just what people power can achieve, but it will be a hollow victory unless we also defeat its Canadian sister CETA (the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement).

Like TTIP, CETA threatens our democracy by giving corporations the power to sue governments if their profits are threatened. Under CETA any of the 40,000 US corporations with subsidiaries in Canada could still sue our government in secret courts.

If we don't act now, CETA will pass into law early next year. And once we’re signed up, we can't get out for 20 years, whether we're in the EU or not. But there's still time to stop CETA.

Dear Liam Fox,

The Canadian / EU trade deal CETA (Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement) has reached the ratification process in the European parliament.

This deal will give any corporation with subsidiaries in Canada the right to sue our government if you pass any law or regulation that may threaten their profits. Legal suits against vital environmental protections, public health measures or any decision to raise the minimum wage could become increasingly common. Corporations will also get a huge say in generating new regulations, which means safety and the interests of ordinary people could come second to the interests of big business and shareholders.

Leaving the EU is no protection from CETA. Once ratified and passed into law, the UK will be subject to CETA for up to 20 years irrespective of EU membership.

The UK should lead the way in ensuring that trade deals are based on respect for human rights, protection of the environment and creating a more equal world.
